Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Anbi'hum (أَنبِئْهُم): Inform them, tell them
  • Bi-asmā'ihim (بِأَسْمَائِهِمْ): Their names — the names of those things that the angels could not name
  • Ghayb (غَيْب): The unseen, that which is hidden from perception
  • Tubdūn (تُبْدُونَ): What you reveal, show openly, or declare
  • Taktumūn (تَكْتُمُونَ): What you conceal, hide, or keep secret within yourselves

The Interpretation:

After the angels admitted their inability to name the things that Allah had taught Adam, Allah turned to Adam and commanded him: "O Adam, inform them of their names." And Adam — upon whom be peace — did exactly that. He named every single thing that was presented before them, precisely as his Lord had taught him. There was not a single error or omission.

When Adam had completed this task, Allah addressed the angels with a gentle yet profound reminder: "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen of the heavens and the earth?" This was a direct reference to what He had said to them earlier when they questioned His wisdom in placing a vicegerent on earth. He had told them, "Indeed, I know that which you do not know" — and now His words were proven true before their very eyes.

Then Allah added: "And I know what you reveal and what you have been concealing." This refers to two things: what the angels had openly said — their remark, "Will You place upon it one who causes corruption and sheds blood, while we declare Your praise and sanctify You?" — and what they had kept hidden within themselves, whether it was a subtle feeling of pride in their obedience, or a quiet wonder about why this new creation was being honored, or any inner thought they harbored. Nothing was hidden from Allah — not the outward words, not the inward feelings, not the secrets of the heavens, nor the mysteries of the earth.

This verse carries a magnificent lesson for every believer. It teaches us that Allah's knowledge encompasses everything — the seen and the unseen, the spoken and the unspoken, the past and the future. When we truly internalize this truth, we realize that we can never hide anything from our Lord. He knows the sincerity of our hearts when we worship Him, and He knows the hidden flaws when we sin in secret. This awareness should fill us with both awe and hope: awe that drives us to purify our intentions, and hope that He who knows our hidden struggles is also the Most Merciful, the Most Forgiving.

It also beautifully demonstrates the honor bestowed upon Adam and his descendants. Allah taught Adam the names and then commanded the angels to acknowledge this knowledge — a clear sign of humanity's unique capacity for learning, understanding, and vicegerency. Every human being carries this potential for knowledge and excellence. When we seek beneficial knowledge with sincere intentions, we are walking in the footsteps of our father Adam, fulfilling the very purpose for which Allah honored us.

And ponder this: if the angels — those noble, sinless creatures — were taught through this event to submit to Allah's wisdom even when they did not fully understand it, how much more should we, as human beings with our limited perception, trust in Allah's plan? Whenever life presents us with circumstances we do not comprehend, let us remember this scene: Allah knows what we do not know, and His wisdom is far greater than our understanding. Our role is to trust, to obey, and to seek knowledge — for knowledge was the very first honor bestowed upon humanity.

📜 Verse 31-35 — Al-Baqarah

And He taught Adam the names - all of them. Then He showed them to the angels and said, "Inform Me of the names of these, if you are truthful."
They said, "Exalted are You; we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, it is You who is the Knowing, the Wise."
He said, "O Adam, inform them of their names." And when he had informed them of their names, He said, "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen [aspects] of the heavens and the earth? And I know what you reveal and what you have concealed."
And [mention] when We said to the angels, "Prostrate before Adam"; so they prostrated, except for Iblees. He refused and was arrogant and became of the disbelievers.
And We said, "O Adam, dwell, you and your wife, in Paradise and eat therefrom in [ease and] abundance from wherever you will. But do not approach this tree, lest you be among the wrongdoers."
