Tafsir (Explanation):
O Children of Israel! Remember the solemn covenant We took from you—a binding pledge that was heavy in its responsibilities. We commanded you to worship none but Allah alone, with no partner or associate. This was the foundation of your faith, the very core of your relationship with your Creator.
We then ordered you to treat your parents with the utmost excellence—kindness, compassion, and obedience in all that does not contradict Allah's command. This duty extended to your close relatives, to orphans who have lost their fathers and are in desperate need of care and protection, and to the poor and needy who struggle to meet their basic needs. Your wealth and compassion were not to be hoarded selfishly but shared with those around you.
We also commanded you to speak to people kindly and truthfully—words that build, heal, and guide. Your speech was to be gentle, even when enjoining good or forbidding evil, without harshness or severity. And you were required to establish the prayer perfectly and to give the zakah (obligatory charity) willingly to those who deserve it.
Yet, despite this sacred covenant, you turned away from it. Only a few among you remained faithful and upheld their pledge. The rest of you abandoned your obligations while fully aware of what you were doing, persisting in your rejection and indifference.
This verse carries a timeless lesson for all of humanity: Allah's covenants are not mere words but living commitments that demand action. When we honor our duties toward Allah and toward His creation—through worship, kindness to parents, care for the vulnerable, good speech, and consistent prayer and charity—we build a society of compassion and justice. But when we turn away, we lose not only Allah's favor but also the very fabric of a harmonious life.
Dear reader, let this be a call to examine your own heart. Have you upheld your covenant with Allah? Do you treat your parents with excellence? Do you speak kindly to people, even those who differ from you? Do you care for the orphans and the needy? Do you establish your prayers and give your charity? The door of repentance is always open, and Allah's mercy embraces those who return to Him with sincerity. Do not be among those who turn away, but be among the few who remain steadfast, for they are the ones who succeed in this life and the next.
