Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

(Yukhādi‘ūn): They seek to deceive, outwit, or delude.
(Allāh): God Almighty.
  • وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا (wa-alladhīna āmanū): And those who believe (the believers).
  • وَمَا يَخْدَعُونَ (wa-mā yakhda‘ūn): They do not deceive (anyone).
  • إِلَّا أَنفُسَهُمْ (illā anfusahum): Except themselves.
  • وَمَا يَشْعُرُونَ (wa-mā yash‘urūn): And they do not perceive or realize (it).

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this verse, Allah Almighty exposes the true state of the hypocrites—those who outwardly declare faith while inwardly concealing disbelief. They imagine, in their profound ignorance and self-delusion, that they can outsmart Allah and deceive the believers by saying, "We believe," when their hearts are void of faith. They think their cleverness will protect them from exposure and punishment.

Yet, Allah reveals the bitter truth: they deceive no one but themselves. Their cunning schemes, their false oaths, and their pretence of faith only harm their own souls. The consequences of their deception—humiliation in this world and severe punishment in the Hereafter—fall squarely upon them. And the most astonishing part is that they are utterly unaware of this reality. Their hearts are so corrupted, so blinded by arrogance and hypocrisy, that they cannot perceive the self-destructive nature of their actions.

Allah knows what is hidden in the breasts and what is even more concealed than the hidden. He has also exposed their traits and conditions to the believers, who see through their hollow words. Thus, the hypocrites' supposed "victory" is nothing but a mirage—a fleeting illusion that vanishes, leaving only ruin behind.

A Da‘wah Reflection:

Dear reader, ponder this profound truth: no one can ever deceive Allah. He is the All-Knowing, the All-Seeing, who perceives the innermost secrets of every heart. The hypocrites of every era—those who wear the mask of faith while harbouring doubt or malice—only harm themselves. Their deception is a rope tied around their own necks, pulling them toward destruction, while they smile in ignorance.

This verse is a gentle yet firm call to sincerity. It invites you to purify your heart, to align your inner state with your outward words, and to remember that Allah’s knowledge encompasses everything. Islam is not a religion of mere appearances; it is a faith of deep, heartfelt conviction. When you truly believe, your actions and intentions become one, and you find peace in knowing that Allah sees your truth—even when others do not.

So, let this be a moment of self-reflection: Are you sincere in your faith? Do your words match your heart? Embrace the beauty of honesty with Allah, for He is the Most Merciful, ever ready to forgive and guide those who turn to Him with a truthful heart. The path of sincerity leads to eternal success, while the path of deception leads only to loss—a truth that the hypocrites, in their blindness, could never grasp.

📜 Verse 7-11 — Al-Baqarah

Allah has set a seal upon their hearts and upon their hearing, and over their vision is a veil. And for them is a great punishment.
And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day," but they are not believers.
They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not.
In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie.
And when it is said to them, "Do not cause corruption on the earth," they say, "We are but reformers."
