Key Words and Phrases:

  • "Marad" (مَرَضٌ): Literally means "sickness" or "disease." In this context, it refers to the spiritual and moral sickness of hypocrisy, doubt, and disbelief that festers in the hearts of the hypocrites.
  • "Fazādahumu Allāhu maradan" (فَزَادَهُمُ اللَّهُ مَرَضًا): "So Allah increased them in disease." This is a divine recompense — a punishment that matches their crime. It means that because they chose to persist in their hypocrisy and lies, Allah left them to sink deeper into their own doubt and confusion, sealing their hearts further from the truth.
  • "ʿAdhābun alīm" (عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ): "A painful torment" — a severe and agonizing punishment, both in this world and, ultimately, in the Hereafter.
  • "Yakdhibūn" (يَكْذِبُونَ): "They used to lie." This refers to their constant lying — to Allah, to His Messenger ﷺ, and to the believers. They claimed to believe while their hearts were full of denial.

The Interpretation:

In their hearts lies a deep-seated spiritual sickness — the sickness of hypocrisy, doubt, and insincerity. They outwardly claimed faith, but inwardly they were consumed by disbelief and deception. Because they chose to nurture this sickness and refused to seek the cure of sincere faith, Allah — in His perfect justice — increased them in that very sickness. This is the divine law of recompense: when a person persists in falsehood and turns away from the truth, their heart becomes progressively harder, their vision becomes more clouded, and they sink deeper into the darkness they have chosen for themselves.

This increase in disease is not an injustice from Allah; rather, it is the natural and just consequence of their own persistent lies and stubborn rejection of the truth. They lied to Allah by claiming faith they did not possess, they lied to the Prophet ﷺ by showing him the opposite of what was in their hearts, and they lied to the believers by spreading corruption and discord while pretending to be part of the community.

For all of this, they are promised a painful and humiliating torment — a punishment that will be most severe in the lowest depths of Hellfire — precisely because of their habitual lying and their relentless denial of the truth that was brought by Muhammad ﷺ.

A Call to Reflection:

This verse is a profound reminder for every soul to examine the state of their own heart. The disease of hypocrisy is silent and destructive — it creeps in when we say one thing and believe another, when we show piety outwardly but harbor doubt or malice within. The cure is sincere faith, honest repentance, and a constant return to Allah with a truthful heart. Do not let your heart become a breeding ground for doubt and deception, for when a heart becomes sick, it loses its ability to see the light of guidance. Turn to Allah now, before the sickness deepens, and ask Him to purify your heart and keep you firm upon the straight path. Indeed, Allah is the Healer of hearts, and His mercy is vast for those who sincerely seek Him.

📜 Verse 8-12 — Al-Baqarah

And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day," but they are not believers.
They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not.
In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie.
And when it is said to them, "Do not cause corruption on the earth," they say, "We are but reformers."
Unquestionably, it is they who are the corrupters, but they perceive [it] not.
