Surah Al-Baqarah — Verse 8

Word Meanings:

• "آمَنَّا" — We have believed, i.e., we have affirmed with our hearts and declared with our tongues.
• "بِالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ" — The Last Day, meaning the Day of Resurrection when all creation will be raised for reckoning and recompense.
• "وَمَا هُم بِمُؤْمِنِينَ" — They are not truly believers, meaning their claim is empty and contradicted by their inner reality.

Tafsir (Explanation):

After Allah Almighty mentioned the believers and their praiseworthy qualities, and then the disbelievers and their blameworthy state, He now turns to a third category — the hypocrites. These are people who outwardly mix with the believers, uttering words of faith with their tongues while their hearts are devoid of any genuine conviction.

Allah says: "And among the people are those who say, 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day,' but they are not believers." This verse exposes the reality of hypocrisy — a disease of the heart that manifests in a contradiction between the tongue and the inner self. These hypocrites claim faith in Allah and the Day of Judgment, yet their claim is a lie. They say it not out of conviction, but out of fear for their lives, their wealth, and their worldly interests. They seek to protect themselves by appearing as Muslims among the believers, while in their hearts they remain hostile to the truth.

This verse serves as a profound lesson for every Muslim: faith is not a matter of mere words. True faith is what settles in the heart and is proven by actions. The hypocrites of every era share this trait — they speak what they do not believe and show what they do not possess. Allah, who knows the secrets of all hearts, exposes them here so that the believers remain vigilant and do not be deceived by outward appearances.

How beautiful is the Quran in unveiling the hidden realities of the soul! This verse calls us to sincerity (ikhlas) in our relationship with Allah. It reminds us that Allah does not look at our outward claims but at the truth of our hearts. Let this be an invitation to purify your intention, to make your tongue and heart agree, and to live your faith not as a label but as a living reality. For the one who is sincere with Allah, Allah will be with him, guide him, and grant him success in this life and the Hereafter. And beware of the path of hypocrisy, for its end is the lowest depth of the Fire — unless one repents and returns to Allah with a truthful heart.
