Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fakhla' na'layk (فَاخْلَعْ نَعْلَيْكَ): Remove your two sandals/shoes.
- Al-Wād al-Muqaddas (الْوَادِ الْمُقَدَّسِ): The sacred, purified valley.
- Ṭuwan (طُوًى): The name of that blessed valley, located near Mount Sinai.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) approached the fire he had seen from afar, expecting to bring back a burning brand for his family, he was met with something far greater than any earthly flame. Allah, the Exalted, called out to him directly: "Indeed, I am your Lord." This was a moment of profound honor and intimacy—the Creator of the heavens and the earth speaking directly to His chosen servant.
The command to remove his sandals was not merely a physical instruction but carried deep spiritual significance. It was a preparation for entering a state of sacred reverence, standing before his Lord in complete humility and purity. The valley of Ṭuwan had been blessed and purified by Allah Himself, and Musa was being invited to step onto this holy ground with full awareness of the Divine presence.
This moment teaches us the importance of preparing ourselves when we turn to Allah—whether in prayer, supplication, or reflection upon His words. Just as Musa was asked to remove what was on his feet, we too are called to shed the burdens of worldly distractions and approach our Lord with a clean heart and sincere intention. The blessed valley reminds us that Allah chooses whom He wills and honors those who seek Him with genuine devotion.
Da'wah Reflection:
Imagine the awe and wonder Musa felt when he heard his Lord's voice for the first time—the same Lord who speaks to us today through His final revelation, the Qur'an. Every time you open the Book of Allah, you are standing in a sacred valley of guidance. Approach it with the same reverence: purify your heart, remove the "sandals" of heedlessness, and let the words of your Creator transform you. This is the path of the prophets, and it is open to every believer who sincerely seeks the truth.
