Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Astawkī'u (أَتَوَكَّأُ): I lean upon it for support while walking.
  • Ahushshu (أَهُشُّ): I strike the branches of trees to make leaves fall.
  • Ma'ārib (مَآرِبُ): Needs, benefits, or purposes.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) responds to Allah's question about what he holds in his right hand. His answer reflects the beautiful humility and simplicity of a servant speaking with his Lord. Musa says: "It is my staff—I lean upon it for support when I walk, and I strike the leaves from the branches with it so that my sheep may graze upon them, and I have in it other uses and benefits as well."

This response reveals several profound lessons. First, Musa mentions the most immediate and practical uses of his staff: it is his walking aid, his tool for providing food for his flock, and his companion in daily work. He does not exaggerate or embellish; he speaks plainly and truthfully. Second, his mention of "other benefits" shows that he did not limit himself to what he knew, but acknowledged that there may be purposes beyond his understanding—a sign of his humility and openness to Allah's wisdom.

The wisdom in this exchange is immense. Allah asked Musa about the staff not because He needed information, but to prepare Musa's heart for the miraculous transformation that was about to occur. By having Musa acknowledge the staff's ordinary uses, Allah then demonstrated His absolute power by turning that same ordinary object into a mighty serpent, and later into a staff that could split the sea. This teaches us that Allah can transform the simplest, most ordinary things in our lives into means of great good and miracles when He wills.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a beautiful reminder for every believer: our daily tools, our simple possessions, and our ordinary routines are all within Allah's knowledge and care. Nothing is too small or insignificant for Him. When we speak with Allah in our prayers, we can converse with Him about our daily affairs, just as Musa did. And we should always remember that the very things we rely on daily—our jobs, our homes, our skills—can become instruments of divine purpose if we remain humble and connected to Allah. Never underestimate what Allah can do through you, even with what seems simple and small. Your ordinary "staff" today may be the means of extraordinary blessings tomorrow, if you remain faithful and obedient to your Lord.

📜 Verse 16-20 — Taha

So do not let one avert you from it who does not believe in it and follows his desire, for you [then] would perish.
And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?"
He said, "It is my staff; I lean upon it, and I bring down leaves for my sheep and I have therein other uses."
[Allah] said, "Throw it down, O Moses."
So he threw it down, and thereupon it was a snake, moving swiftly.
