Translation — Tafsir

Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Tilka (تِلْكَ): That (feminine demonstrative pronoun, referring to something distant or already known).
  • Bi-yameenika (بِيَمِينِكَ): In your right hand.
  • Ya Musa (يَا مُوسَىٰ): O Moses — a direct address by Allah, full of honour and closeness.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this blessed verse, Allah — Glorified and Exalted — addresses His Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) with a gentle, affectionate question: *"And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?"*

This is not a question of ignorance, for Allah knows all things. Rather, it is a question of establishment and attention — a rhetorical device used to draw the listener’s full focus to what is before them. Through this loving inquiry, Allah prepares Moses’ heart and mind for the magnificent miracle that is about to unfold. It is as if Allah is saying: "Look at what you hold, O Moses. Do you know what it truly is? Do you realise what I am about to do with it?"

The wisdom behind this question is profound: by having Moses himself acknowledge that it is merely his staff — an ordinary wooden stick he used for walking, herding sheep, and other daily needs — the subsequent transformation of that same staff into a living, moving serpent becomes an undeniable, awe-inspiring proof of Allah’s absolute power. The ordinary becomes extraordinary; the simple becomes miraculous — all by the will of the Almighty.

This style of questioning was well known among the Arabs: a person would ask another, "Do you know this?" — not because they doubted the other’s knowledge, but to make them verbally affirm what they already knew, so that the truth would be firmly established in both heart and tongue.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, pause and reflect on the beauty of this divine dialogue. The Lord of the Worlds, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, speaks directly to His prophet with such tenderness and care. He does not rebuke or frighten Moses; rather, He engages him in conversation, preparing him for a great honour.

This verse teaches us that Allah draws near to His righteous servants and speaks to them in ways that fill their hearts with peace and certainty. It also reminds us that Allah can transform the humblest of things into the most magnificent of signs — for nothing is impossible for Him. When you feel weak, ordinary, or insignificant, remember that the same Allah who turned a simple staff into a miracle is capable of turning your life into a testimony of His greatness — if only you submit to Him and trust in His plan.

So, let this verse inspire you to deepen your relationship with your Creator, to listen attentively when He calls, and to always be ready for His divine intervention in your life. For when Allah is with you, even the smallest thing in your hand can become a means of immense good and a sign of His boundless power.

📜 Verse 15-19 — Taha

Indeed, the Hour is coming - I almost conceal it - so that every soul may be recompensed according to that for which it strives.
So do not let one avert you from it who does not believe in it and follows his desire, for you [then] would perish.
And what is that in your right hand, O Moses?"
He said, "It is my staff; I lean upon it, and I bring down leaves for my sheep and I have therein other uses."
[Allah] said, "Throw it down, O Moses."
