Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Manannā (مَنَنَّا): We bestowed Our favor and grace upon you.
- Marrah ukhrā (مَرَّةً أُخْرَى): Another time, a previous occasion.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse is part of Allah’s address to Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him), reminding him of His abundant favors. Allah says: "And indeed We conferred a favor upon you another time (before)." This refers to the earlier blessings Allah granted Musa during his infancy and youth, long before the great honor of prophethood and direct conversation with Allah on Mount Tur.
In this brief yet profound statement, Allah points to the protection and care He showed Musa when he was a helpless baby. At that time, Pharaoh was slaughtering the male infants of the Children of Israel out of fear that a boy would rise to challenge his tyranny. Allah saved Musa from this massacre by inspiring his mother to place him in a chest and cast it into the river, then guiding the chest to reach Pharaoh’s own palace, where he was raised under Allah’s watchful eye—even as his enemy unknowingly nurtured him. This was a divine plan that combined mercy, protection, and preparation for the great mission that lay ahead.
The verse also carries a deeper lesson: Allah’s favors are continuous and interconnected. The earlier protection of Musa was not a random event; it was part of a chain of divine care that led to his eventual role as a messenger. Every trial and blessing in his life was orchestrated by Allah’s wisdom.
A Da‘wah Reflection (Call to Faith):
This verse invites every believer to reflect on their own life and recognize the countless favors Allah has bestowed upon them—even before they were aware of them. Just as Allah protected Musa in his weakest moment, He protects and guides His servants in ways they may not perceive. When you look back at your life, you will find moments of danger that turned into safety, moments of loss that turned into gain, and moments of confusion that turned into clarity—all by the mercy of Allah.
This should fill your heart with gratitude and trust in Allah. If He was with Musa when he was a helpless infant, He is with you in your times of need. So turn to Him with a sincere heart, thank Him for His past favors, and ask Him to guide you to what pleases Him. Indeed, the One who blessed you before will not abandon you now—if you remain steadfast in faith and obedience. Let this verse be a reminder that Allah’s mercy precedes His judgment, and His love for His righteous servants is eternal. Praise be to Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
