Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ — "What is before them and what is behind them": refers to their past deeds and their future deeds, all of which Allah knows completely.
- لِمَنِ ارْتَضَىٰ — "For whom He approves": only those whom Allah is pleased with and has granted permission for intercession.
- مُشْفِقُونَ — "Are fearful/awestruck": filled with profound reverence, awe, and fear of Allah's majesty.
The Tafsir (Interpretation):
Allah, the All-Knowing, encompasses everything about His creation—the angels and all beings. He knows every action they have performed in the past and every action they will undertake in the future. Nothing is hidden from His knowledge, whether it occurred ages ago or will happen in the distant times to come. This absolute knowledge is a sign of His perfect sovereignty and complete control over all affairs.
Moreover, even the angels—those noble and obedient servants of Allah—do not dare to intercede for anyone except with Allah's permission and only for those with whom He is pleased. Intercession is not a right they assume on their own; rather, it is a privilege granted solely by Allah's will and choice. The ones who receive this honor are those who lived and died upon true faith, declaring the oneness of Allah (Lā ilāha illallāh) with sincerity.
Despite their high rank, closeness to Allah, and continuous worship, the angels remain in a state of profound awe and fear of their Lord. They are ever cautious, trembling from His majesty, never daring to disobey His command or violate His prohibition. Their fear is not a fear of punishment alone, but a deep, reverential awe born of their immense love and recognition of Allah's infinite greatness.
A Da'wah Reflection for the Believer:
This verse teaches us a beautiful and humbling lesson: if the angels—who are sinless, constantly glorifying Allah, and nearest to Him—are so filled with awe and fear of their Creator, how much more should we, as human beings with our shortcomings and mistakes, strive to be conscious of Allah in all our affairs?
Yet, at the same time, this verse fills the believer's heart with hope. It tells us that Allah, in His mercy, has designated intercession for those He approves—those who sincerely believed in His oneness and lived righteous lives. So let us race toward what pleases Him: sincere faith, good deeds, and a heart that trembles with love and reverence for its Lord. Let us be among those who say "Lā ilāha illallāh" with their tongues, believe it with their hearts, and act upon it with their limbs—so that we may be among those for whom intercession is granted, by Allah's grace and mercy.
