Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Fatā (فَتًى): A young man, a youth.
  • Yadhkuruhum (يَذْكُرُهُمْ): Mentions them (i.e., speaks about the idols) — in this context, it means speaking ill of them, criticizing them, or threatening them with harm.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This verse captures a pivotal moment in the story of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and his confrontation with the idolatry of his people. When the people returned to their temple and found their idols shattered into pieces — except for the largest one, on whose shoulder the axe was left — they were enraged and demanded to know who had committed this act.

Among the crowd, some who had earlier heard Ibrahim (peace be upon him) speak out against their idols, even swearing by Allah that he would devise a plan against them, stepped forward and said: "We heard a young man mentioning them (the idols) with contempt and criticism. He is called Ibrahim."

This statement was not merely an accusation; it was a testimony to the courage and sincerity of Ibrahim (peace be upon him). He was a young man, yet he stood firm in his faith, unafraid to challenge the deeply entrenched polytheism of his community. His words and actions were so striking that they left an impression on those who heard him.

The verse highlights several profound lessons for us:

First, the power of truth. Ibrahim (peace be upon him) did not hide his beliefs or his mission. He spoke openly against falsehood, and even when threatened with punishment, he remained steadfast. This teaches us that when we are certain of the truth, we must proclaim it with courage and wisdom, regardless of the consequences.

Second, the impact of sincere action. The people did not merely hear Ibrahim's words; they witnessed his deeds. His breaking of the idols was not an act of vandalism but a powerful demonstration of the futility of worshipping created objects. It was a call to reason, a reminder that only Allah — the Creator of all things — deserves worship.

Third, the importance of youth in the service of Allah. Ibrahim was a young man when he took this stand. This is a beautiful reminder that age is not a barrier to faith or to making a difference. Young Muslims today can draw inspiration from Ibrahim's example — to be bold in their faith, to seek knowledge, and to stand up for what is right, even if they stand alone.

Fourth, the verse shows how Allah prepared the hearts of the people to recognize Ibrahim's role. Even those who did not yet believe acknowledged his presence and his words. This is a sign that when a person is sincere in their devotion to Allah, Allah places their mention and their impact in the hearts of others — whether those others are believers or not.

Fifth, this story invites us to reflect on our own relationship with idols — not necessarily statues, but the "idols" of our time: unchecked desires, love of wealth, status, or anything that distracts us from the worship of Allah alone. Ibrahim's courage challenges us to break these idols in our own hearts and to purify our lives so that our worship is directed solely to Allah.

Finally, this verse is a call to action for every believer. Just as Ibrahim's people remembered his words, our words and deeds are remembered by others. Let us strive to be among those whose mention is associated with goodness, truth, and the call to Allah — so that when people speak of us, they say, "We heard a person who spoke the truth and stood for justice."

May Allah grant us the courage of Ibrahim (peace be upon him), the wisdom to speak the truth with grace, and the sincerity to act for His sake alone. And may He make us among those who guide others to the light of Islam, the religion of pure monotheism and complete submission to the will of Allah.
