Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- عَلَىٰ أَعْيُنِ النَّاسِ — In plain sight, before the eyes of the people, publicly and openly.
- لَعَلَّهُمْ يَشْهَدُونَ — So that they may witness (and testify) against him.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the chiefs of the people of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him) heard that he had smashed their idols, they were enraged and demanded that he be brought to account. They said: "Bring him before the eyes of the people, in full public view, so that they may witness his confession and his actions with their own eyes." Their intention was to make an example of him — to have witnesses testify that Ibrahim had indeed spoken against their gods and destroyed them, so that they could punish him with undeniable proof, and so that the public would see the consequences of challenging their false beliefs.
This verse reveals the arrogance and cunning of those who reject the truth. They sought to humiliate Ibrahim publicly, thinking that by gathering a crowd, they could intimidate him and silence his call to monotheism. Yet, as the story unfolds, Allah turned their plot upside down — the very public gathering became the stage for Ibrahim to expose the folly of their idol worship, and the witnesses who came to testify against him ended up witnessing the triumph of truth over falsehood.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Notice how the enemies of truth always try to suppress it with noise, numbers, and intimidation. They gather crowds, they make spectacles, they try to shame the believers. But Allah's promise is firm: truth does not need the approval of the masses to be true. When you stand for Allah's cause, even if the whole world stands against you, remember that Allah is with you. The same public stage that the disbelievers prepared to humiliate Ibrahim became the very platform from which Allah honored him. So never fear the eyes of the people — fear only Allah, and know that the final victory belongs to the righteous. Let this story fill your heart with courage: when you speak the truth with sincerity, Allah Himself becomes your witness, your supporter, and your protector.
