Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

(Sabab): A rope or a means of reaching something; here, it refers to a rope.
(Al-Samaa): The sky; in this context, it means the ceiling of a house or the highest point one can reach.
(Liyaqta'): To cut off; here, it means to sever the rope after tying it around one's neck, i.e., to strangle oneself.
(Kayduhu): His plan, action, or scheme.
(Ma Yagheez): That which causes rage or anger; the intense frustration and resentment one feels.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse addresses those who are consumed by anger and resentment against the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the message of Islam. They doubt that Allah will grant victory to His Messenger in this world and the Hereafter. To them, Allah issues a powerful and challenging call: if you truly believe that Allah will not support His Prophet, then let your frustration drive you to the ultimate extreme.

The verse says: Let such a person stretch a rope to the ceiling of his house, tie it around his neck, and then cut himself off from the ground—strangling himself to death. Then, let him see whether this desperate act of his will remove the rage burning in his heart. The answer is clear: it will not. His anger will die with him, but the truth of Allah's promise remains unshaken. Allah will certainly grant victory to His Messenger and His religion, whether the disbelievers like it or not.

This is a rhetorical challenge meant to expose the futility of their opposition. It tells them: if you are so enraged that you cannot bear to see Islam prevail, then the only "solution" you have is to end your own life—because nothing you do will stop Allah's decree. The victory of truth is inevitable, and your schemes and plots are worthless against the will of Allah.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse is a profound reminder of the certainty of Allah's promise. Throughout history, the enemies of truth have tried every means to extinguish the light of Islam—through persecution, mockery, and war—yet the religion of Allah has only grown stronger. The Prophet (peace be upon him) faced immense hardship, but Allah's support never failed him. From the caves of Makkah to the conquest of it, the promise of Allah was fulfilled.

For us as believers, this verse instills a deep sense of trust in Allah. No matter how powerful the opposition may seem, no matter how dark the circumstances, Allah's help is near. The anger of the disbelievers is their own undoing; it consumes them, while the believers remain steadfast, knowing that the final victory belongs to the righteous.

So, dear reader, let this verse strengthen your faith. Do not be disheartened by the trials of this world or the arrogance of those who oppose the truth. Place your reliance on Allah, for He is the Best of Planners. And remember: the rage of the enemies of Islam will never change what Allah has decreed—His light will shine, His word will prevail, and His faithful servants will be honored in this life and the next.

📜 Verse 13-17 — Al-Hajj

He invokes one whose harm is closer than his benefit - how wretched the protector and how wretched the associate.
Indeed, Allah will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds to gardens beneath which rivers flow. Indeed, Allah does what He intends.
Whoever should think that Allah will not support [Prophet Muhammad] in this world and the Hereafter - let him extend a rope to the ceiling, then cut off [his breath], and let him see: will his effort remove that which enrages [him]?
And thus have We sent the Qur'an down as verses of clear evidence and because Allah guides whom He intends.
Indeed, those who have believed and those who were Jews and the Sabeans and the Christians and the Magians and those who associated with Allah - Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed Allah is, over all things, Witness.
