Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Aḥyākum (أَحْيَاكُمْ): He brought you to life, creating you from nothing and granting you existence.
- Yumītukum (يُمِيتُكُمْ): He causes you to die at the end of your appointed lifespan.
- Yuḥyīkum (يُحْيِيكُمْ): He will bring you back to life again on the Day of Resurrection.
- Kafūr (كَفُور): Extremely ungrateful, denying and rejecting Allah’s favors despite their clarity.
Explanation of the Verse:
Allah — glorified and exalted — is the One who brought you into existence from absolute nothingness, giving you life in the wombs of your mothers. He then causes you to die when your appointed time in this world comes to an end, a decree that no soul can escape or delay. And then, after your death, He will bring you back to life once more for the Resurrection, so that He may hold you accountable for your deeds and recompense you with perfect justice — rewarding the righteous with Paradise and punishing the wicked with Hellfire.
This sequence — life, then death, then life again — is a manifest proof of Allah’s absolute power and His sole right to worship. Yet, despite these clear signs, the human being is extremely ungrateful. He witnesses the miracle of his own existence, the certainty of his death, and the promise of his resurrection, and still he turns away, denying his Lord’s favors, associating partners with Him in worship, and rejecting the truth that is laid bare before him.
A Call to Reflection and Faith:
Dear reader, pause and reflect on this profound truth: you did not create yourself, and you cannot prevent your own death, nor can you guarantee your return to life. All of this is in the Hands of Allah alone. If He could create you from nothing the first time, is He not able to bring you back after death? Indeed, He is the All-Powerful over everything.
This verse is an invitation to open your heart to your Creator — the One who gave you life, who sustains you, and who will raise you again. Do not be among the ungrateful who see the signs yet turn away. Instead, be among the grateful who recognize their Lord, worship Him alone, and prepare for the Day when they will meet Him. For that Day is certain, and the wise are those who act now, before death overtakes them, and who return to Allah with a sincere heart, hoping for His mercy and fearing His punishment.
