Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Az-Zakah (الزكاة): The obligatory alms-giving and purification of wealth, a fixed portion of one's surplus wealth given to those entitled to receive it.
- Fāʿilūn (فاعلون): Those who actively do and perform something, not merely claim or intend it.
Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse describes a defining quality of the believers who will inherit Paradise: they are those who actively and consistently fulfill the duty of Zakah. This is not a passive acknowledgment of the obligation, but an active, ongoing practice. The term "fāʿilūn" emphasizes that they actually do it—they pay it with their own hands, at the proper time, and in the proper manner.
Zakah carries a dual meaning that this verse beautifully captures. First, it purifies the soul from the vices of miserliness, greed, and excessive attachment to worldly wealth. Second, it purifies one's wealth itself, ensuring that what remains is blessed and lawful. By giving a portion of what Allah has provided, the believer acknowledges that all wealth ultimately belongs to Allah, and that they are merely trustees of it.
This verse also reminds us that Zakah is a pillar of Islam, not a voluntary charity alone. It is a right that the poor and needy have upon the wealth of the rich. The believers described here do not delay, withhold, or make excuses—they fulfill this duty with sincerity and promptness, understanding that their wealth is a test from Allah and that giving purifies both their hearts and their earnings.
Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this verse: Allah does not merely say that the believers "pay" Zakah, but that they are "doers" of it. This means their entire being is aligned with this act of worship—it becomes a habit, a character trait, a way of life. Imagine the peace that fills a heart when it is free from the love of hoarding wealth, when it knows that its money is a means of connection with Allah and with His creation. Zakah is not a loss; it is a purification and a growth. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that charity does not decrease wealth—rather, Allah increases and blesses what is given in His path. So take this verse as an invitation: open your hand in giving, purify your soul from attachment to the material, and taste the sweetness of a heart that trusts its Provider. This is the path of the successful believers, and it is open to you today.
