Tafsir (Explanation):
The polytheists of Arabia, in their profound ignorance, took for themselves gods besides Allah—the One True Creator, the Sustainer of all existence. These so-called "gods" were nothing more than idols carved from stone, wood, or metal by human hands. Yet, despite their worship, these false deities possess absolutely none of the attributes of divinity.
Consider this: they cannot create even the smallest thing—not a speck of dust, not a leaf, not a single cell—while they themselves are created. The very hands of their worshippers shaped them, chiseled them, and gave them form. They are dependent on humans for their existence, while true divinity demands absolute independence and creative power.
Moreover, these idols have no control over their own destiny. They cannot ward off harm from themselves—if a fire burns them, they crumble; if a flood sweeps them away, they are lost. They cannot bring benefit to themselves—they cannot move, speak, or even protect themselves from decay. How then could they possibly benefit or harm their worshippers?
And what of life and death? These false gods hold no power over death—they cannot cause anyone to die, nor can they give life to a single soul. They are lifeless objects themselves! And as for the resurrection—the great day when all humanity will be raised from their graves to face their Lord—these idols have absolutely no say or ability in that matter whatsoever.
The message is clear and profound: any being that is created, powerless, and incapable of life-giving or resurrection is utterly unworthy of worship. True worship belongs solely to Allah, the Ever-Living, the All-Powerful, who creates from nothing, who gives life and causes death, and who will certainly resurrect all of creation for the final reckoning.
Dear reader, reflect deeply on this verse. How can a rational mind bow down to a stone that cannot hear, see, or help? How can a heart find peace in worshipping something that is weaker than the one worshipping it? Islam calls you to the worship of the One who deserves all praise—the Lord of the heavens and the earth, who hears your prayers, answers your calls, and has prepared for His righteous servants a reward beyond imagination. Turn to Him, and you will find true peace and eternal success.
