Word Meanings:

  • "Ajr" (أجر): Reward, payment, or compensation.
  • "Sabeel" (سبيل): A path, way, or means — here referring to the path that leads to Allah's pleasure and salvation.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah instructs His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) to declare clearly to the people: "I do not ask you for any payment or reward for conveying this message of guidance to you." The Prophet's mission was purely sincere — he sought no worldly gain, no wealth, no status, and no favor from anyone. His only concern was the salvation and well-being of humanity.

However, the verse contains a beautiful and profound exception: "Except that whoever wishes may take a path to his Lord." This means that if anyone desires to spend from their wealth, it is not as a payment to the Prophet, but rather as a means of drawing closer to Allah. Such spending is for their own benefit, not for the Prophet's benefit. The Prophet does not force anyone to spend, nor does he benefit from their wealth — rather, whoever chooses to spend in the way of Allah does so for their own spiritual growth and reward.

This verse dismantles any excuse that disbelievers might use to reject the message, such as claiming that the Prophet was calling them only to take their wealth. It also establishes a profound principle: the call to Islam is free from any worldly compensation, and any spending done by believers is purely for their own souls' purification and elevation.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse is a timeless reminder for every Muslim that the path to Allah is open to all — it does not require wealth, status, or power. What it requires is a sincere heart and a willing soul. The Prophet (peace be upon him) dedicated his entire life to guiding humanity without asking for anything in return. Today, as his followers, we are invited to follow this noble example — to give without expecting, to serve without seeking reward from people, and to spend in the way of Allah knowing that He alone is the ultimate Provider and Rewarder.

Dear reader, the door of guidance is wide open before you. You do not need to pay anyone to reach your Lord — you only need to take that first step with sincerity. Every good deed you do, every dollar you spend in charity, every effort you make to learn and practice your faith — all of it is a path you build for yourself toward Allah's pleasure and Paradise. So seize this opportunity, for the Prophet has already shown you the way, free of charge, out of pure love and mercy for you. Will you not take the path?

📜 Verse 55-59 — Al-Furqan

But they worship rather than Allah that which does not benefit them or harm them, and the disbeliever is ever, against his Lord, an assistant [to Satan].
And We have not sent you, [O Muhammad], except as a bringer of good tidings and a warner.
Say, "I do not ask of you for it any payment - only that whoever wills might take to his Lord a way."
And rely upon the Ever-Living who does not die, and exalt [Allah] with His praise. And sufficient is He to be, with the sins of His servants, Acquainted -
He who created the heavens and the earth and what is between them in six days and then established Himself above the Throne - the Most Merciful, so ask about Him one well informed.
