Word Meanings:
- Al-Ardhalūn (الأَرْذَلُونَ): The lowly, the humble, those of low social standing or modest professions — the opposite of the noble and elite.
Explanation of the Verse:
When Prophet Nuh (peace be upon him) called his people to the worship of Allah alone, the leaders and chiefs of his people responded with arrogance and disdain. They said to him: "How can we believe in you and follow your message, when those who have followed you are only the lowly and the humble among us — the poor, the weak, and those of modest trades?"
They looked down upon the believers because of their social status, thinking that truth is measured by the rank and wealth of its followers. They failed to realize that guidance is not a privilege of the rich or the powerful, but a blessing from Allah that He bestows upon whomever He wills — regardless of their standing in society.
This was not the first nor the last time that the arrogant rejected the truth because of the humble appearance of its followers. The same argument was raised against Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) by the Quraysh, who said: "Shall we believe in you, while the weak and the poor follow you?"
A Lesson for Us:
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: the value of a person in the sight of Allah is not measured by wealth, lineage, or social rank, but by faith, piety, and sincerity. The companions of the prophets were often from the humble classes — yet they became the pillars of faith and the torchbearers of guidance for all of humanity.
How beautiful is the example of Bilal ibn Rabah (may Allah be pleased with him), a former slave, who became the mu'adhdhin (caller to prayer) of the Prophet and a beloved companion — his faith elevated him to a rank that no wealth could ever buy.
So let us never look down upon the poor or the weak among the believers, for Allah may have placed in their hearts a light of faith that the wealthy and powerful lack. And let us remember that the measure of true honor is not in this world's fleeting status, but in the scales of Allah on the Day of Judgment.
