Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Fattaqullāh (فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ): Fear Allah, be mindful of Him, and protect yourselves from His punishment by obeying His commands and avoiding His prohibitions.
- Wa Aṭīʿūn (وَأَطِيعُونِ): And obey me — follow what I (Nūḥ, peace be upon him) command you and abstain from what I forbid you.
Explanation of the Verse:
After Prophet Nūḥ (Noah), peace be upon him, called his people to worship Allah alone, to abandon idolatry, and to believe in his message — he then urged them with this concise yet profound command: "So fear Allah and obey me."
This is a call to *taqwā* (God-consciousness) — the inner state of being ever aware that Allah sees all, knows all, and will hold every soul accountable for its deeds. It is the shield that protects a believer from falling into sin and the light that guides one toward righteousness. When a person truly fears Allah, they prioritize His pleasure over their own desires, and they find the strength to abandon even the most deeply rooted habits of wrongdoing.
Then comes the second part: "and obey me." Nūḥ, peace be upon him, was not asking for blind submission to his personal whims; rather, he was inviting them to obey the commands of Allah that he conveyed. His obedience was a means to their salvation — both in this world and the Hereafter. He was a messenger of mercy, calling them to the path that leads to eternal bliss.
This verse is a beautiful summary of the entire message of Islam: *taqwā* — the inner purification and awareness of Allah, and *ṭāʿah* — the outward obedience to His messengers. The two are inseparable; one without the other is incomplete. A heart that truly fears Allah will naturally incline to obey His commands, and obedience to the messengers is the practical manifestation of that fear.
The repetition of this call in the story of Nūḥ (as mentioned in the context of the chapter) serves as an emphatic reminder — because human beings are forgetful and easily distracted. The prophets, peace be upon them all, repeated their call to their people again and again, out of compassion and mercy, hoping that their hearts would soften and turn to their Lord.
A Call to Reflection:
Dear reader, this simple yet powerful verse carries a timeless message for all of humanity. The path to success — in this life and the next — is not complicated. It begins with a sincere heart that fears Allah, and it is completed by following the guidance He sent through His prophets. When you combine these two, you unlock the door to inner peace, moral excellence, and ultimate salvation.
Allah, in His infinite mercy, did not leave us without guidance. He sent messengers to every nation, and the final message came through Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, confirming the truth brought by Nūḥ and all the prophets before him. So let this verse inspire you: fear Allah in every moment, and follow the guidance of His final messenger. That is the key to a life of purpose, tranquility, and eternal success.
