Word Meanings:

  • أَخَافُ (akhāfu): I fear, I am apprehensive.
  • يُكَذِّبُونِ (yukadhdhibūn): They will deny me, they will reject my message as false.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this verse, Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) addresses his Lord with a sincere and humble plea. He says: "My Lord, indeed I fear that they will deny me." This is not a fear born of weakness or lack of faith, but rather a natural human concern expressed by a prophet who is about to undertake an immensely difficult mission—confronting the most powerful and tyrannical ruler of his time, Pharaoh, and his court.

Musa's fear here is twofold. First, he fears that his people, the Children of Israel, and the Egyptians will reject the message he has been commanded to deliver. Second, as explained by scholars, he fears that the weight of their denial will constrict his heart and affect his ability to speak clearly and persuasively. This is why, in the following verses, he asks Allah to send his brother Harun (Aaron) as a supporter and helper, and to remove the impediment from his tongue so that his words may be understood.

It is important to note that Musa had a speech impediment, and he had also accidentally killed a man from Pharaoh's people before fleeing Egypt. So he feared that Pharaoh's people might seek retribution against him, which would further hinder his mission.

This verse teaches us a profound lesson: even the greatest of prophets experienced human emotions like fear and anxiety. Yet, they turned to Allah with complete trust and supplication, seeking His help and support. This is a beautiful example of *tawakkul* (reliance on Allah) combined with *du'a* (supplication). When you face a daunting task, do not be ashamed of your feelings—rather, turn to Allah, express your concerns to Him, and ask for His assistance. He is the One who removes difficulties, opens hearts, and makes the impossible possible.

The Qur'an presents this intimate conversation between Musa and his Lord to inspire you: no matter how great the challenge, Allah is always listening. He responded to Musa's plea by granting him Harun as a helper, strengthening his heart, and loosening his tongue. So trust in Allah, for He never abandons those who call upon Him with sincerity.

📜 Verse 10-14 — Ash-Shu'ara

And [mention] when your Lord called Moses, [saying], "Go to the wrongdoing people -
The people of Pharaoh. Will they not fear Allah?"
He said, "My Lord, indeed I fear that they will deny me
And that my breast will tighten and my tongue will not be fluent, so send for Aaron.
And they have upon me a [claim due to] sin, so I fear that they will kill me."
