Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Bashar (بشر): A human being, a mortal person.
- Mithluna (مثلنا): Like us, similar to us in nature and form.
- Ayat (آية): A sign, miracle, or clear proof.
- Al-Sadiqin (الصادقين): Those who are truthful in their claims.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, we see the people of Thamud addressing their Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) with words that reveal their arrogance and stubbornness. They said: "You are nothing but a human being like us" — meaning, you eat and drink just as we do, you walk in our markets, and you possess no apparent superiority over us. How then can you claim to be a Messenger of Allah, chosen to receive revelation? In their ignorance, they believed that a messenger must be an angel, not a mortal man.
Then they added: "So bring us a sign if you are indeed truthful" — demanding a miracle that would prove the authenticity of his prophethood. They were not asking for guidance or seeking the truth with sincere hearts; rather, they were challenging him arrogantly, thinking that he would fail and be exposed as a liar in their eyes.
The deeper lesson here is profound. The people of Thamud failed to recognize that Allah's wisdom in sending human messengers is precisely because humans can relate to humans. A messenger who eats, drinks, feels joy and sorrow, and faces the trials of life is better equipped to guide humanity. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was also challenged similarly, and Allah responded by pointing to the Qur'an itself as the eternal miracle — a book that defies human ability to imitate.
This verse also teaches us about the nature of those who reject the truth. When people are determined to disbelieve, they will always find excuses — even the humanity of the messenger becomes a point of objection. Yet, when Allah wills to support His messengers, He grants them miracles that silence every critic. For Salih, the miracle was the she-camel that emerged from the rock — a sign that left them with no excuse but still, most of them chose to disbelieve.
As believers, we should reflect on how Allah responds to those who demand signs. He gave them what they asked for, and when they still rejected it, His punishment was swift and severe. This should be a reminder for us to accept the truth when it is clear, and not to be among those who keep moving the goalposts of faith. The greatest sign we have today is the Qur'an itself — its linguistic beauty, its scientific accuracy, and its profound guidance for all of humanity. Let us hold firmly to it and be grateful for the mercy of having been guided to Islam without having to witness the terrifying signs that the previous nations demanded.
