Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Al-Musahharīn (الْمُسَحَّرِينَ): Those who have been bewitched or enchanted repeatedly, to the extent that their intellect has been overcome by magic.
Tafsir (Explanation):
The people of Thamud addressed their Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) with words of rejection and mockery, saying: "You are nothing but one of those who have been heavily bewitched — magic has been cast upon you so many times that it has overwhelmed your mind and taken away your sound reasoning." They claimed that he was merely a human being like themselves, no different from them in any way, and therefore how could he be singled out with prophethood and divine revelation? In their arrogance and stubbornness, they demanded: "Bring us a clear proof to establish the truth of your message, if you are indeed truthful in your claim that Allah has sent you to us."
This was not the first time the enemies of truth resorted to such accusations. When a prophet brings a message that challenges people's desires and calls them to monotheism and righteousness, the arrogant ones often try to discredit him by claiming he is insane, bewitched, or a liar — simply because they cannot accept that an ordinary human being could be chosen by Allah to guide them.
A Da'wah Reflection:
How often do we see this pattern repeated throughout history? When the truth is presented clearly, those who are attached to their falsehood find every excuse to reject it rather than reflect upon it. The people of Thamud had witnessed the miracle of the she-camel — a sign of Allah's power — yet they still refused to believe, resorting instead to weak accusations that had no basis in reality.
Dear reader, let this verse be a lesson for us all: Do not let pride and arrogance blind you from the truth. When you hear the words of Allah and the guidance of His final Messenger Muhammad (peace be upon him), approach them with an open heart and a sound mind. The Qur'an is not magic — it is the eternal miracle that challenges humanity to produce even a single chapter like it, and none have been able to do so. Reflect upon its meanings, and you will find in it the light that illuminates your path in this life and the next. Allah says: "Indeed, this Qur'an guides to that which is most suitable" (Al-Isra: 9). Open your heart to it, and you will find peace, purpose, and salvation.
