Surah Ash-Shu'ara — Verse 159

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse comes as a comforting and reassuring conclusion to the story of Prophet Shuʿayb (peace be upon him) and his people, who rejected him and were ultimately destroyed by the punishment of Allah. After recounting the fate of those who denied the truth, Allah addresses His Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) directly, saying: "And indeed, your Lord — He is surely the Almighty, the Most Merciful."

The meaning here is profound and twofold. First, Allah is Al-ʿAzīz — the Almighty, the All-Powerful, the One whose might is absolute and whose vengeance upon the wrongdoers is certain. He is fully capable of taking retribution from those who reject His messengers, mock His signs, and persist in their arrogance and disbelief. No one can escape His grasp, and no force can stand against His will. This is a source of great reassurance for the believers, especially when they face hardship, oppression, or ridicule from the enemies of truth — for they know that ultimate victory belongs to Allah, and His justice will prevail.

Second, Allah is Ar-Raḥīm — the Most Merciful — towards His believing servants. His mercy is vast, encompassing those who turn to Him in repentance, who believe in His messengers, and who strive to obey Him. This mercy is not merely a passive attribute; it manifests in His forgiveness, His guidance, His provision, and His reward for the righteous in this life and the Hereafter. He does not hasten punishment upon His servants without giving them ample opportunity to repent, and when they do turn back to Him, He welcomes them with open arms of compassion.

The verse beautifully balances two essential attributes of Allah: His might and His mercy. His might ensures that evil will not go unpunished, while His mercy ensures that goodness will not go unrewarded. For the believer, this is a source of both awe and hope — awe of His power, and hope in His boundless compassion.

Dear reader, reflect on the beauty of this verse. Your Lord, who created you and sustains you, is not only powerful beyond imagination — He is also infinitely merciful. He does not abandon His servants, nor does He treat them with harshness. Even when you stumble and fall into sin, His mercy is there, waiting for you to return to Him. He says in another verse: "Say, 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful'" (Az-Zumar 39:53).

So never lose hope in Allah's mercy, and never doubt His power. If you are facing trials in this life because of your faith, take comfort — the Almighty is with you, and He will never let the efforts of the righteous go to waste. And if you have erred, know that the door of repentance is always open. Turn to Him, and you will find Him more merciful to you than a mother to her child. This is the beauty of Islam — a religion that combines the awe of Allah's majesty with the warmth of His love. Embrace it, and let your heart find peace in the certainty that your Lord is indeed Al-ʿAzīz, Ar-Raḥīm.
