Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-ʿAdhāb (العذاب): The severe punishment and torment sent by Allah upon the disbelieving nation.
  • Āyah (آية): A profound sign, lesson, or clear evidence that points to the truth.

Tafsir (Explanation):

The punishment that Prophet Ṣāliḥ (peace be upon him) had warned his people about—the mighty earthquake and the terrifying blast—finally seized them. They were utterly destroyed, and no one among them could escape the decree of Allah. Their arrogance, their rejection of the truth, and their defiance of the divine message led them to this catastrophic end.

In this historical event lies a profound and unmistakable sign for anyone who reflects: the fate of the people of Thamūd stands as a living testimony to the truth of Allah’s warnings and the consequences of stubborn disbelief. Yet, despite all the miracles and clear proofs that were shown to them, most of them did not believe. Their hearts were sealed by their own pride and obstinacy.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, pause and ponder this story. The same Allah who destroyed the mighty nation of Thamūd is alive today, watching over His creation. His promise is true, and His justice is perfect. This is not merely a tale of the past—it is a mirror for every generation. The Qur’an invites you to open your heart, to see the signs around you, and to submit to the One who created you. Do not let arrogance or worldly distractions blind you as they blinded those before you. Embrace the truth while there is still time, for the mercy of Allah is vast, and His door of repentance is open to all who sincerely turn to Him. Let this story be a lesson that softens your heart and draws you closer to your Lord, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate.
