Surah Ash-Shu'ara — Verse 205

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah addresses His beloved Messenger ﷺ directly, inviting him — and through him, all of humanity — to reflect deeply on a critical truth. Allah says: "Have you considered, O Messenger, if We granted these disbelievers enjoyment of life for many years?"

This refers to the disbelievers of Makkah who rejected the message of truth, yet were given respite — they continued to live, eat, drink, prosper, and enjoy the comforts of this world. They were not immediately punished for their arrogance and denial. Allah granted them extended lifespans, wealth, health, and worldly pleasures, allowing them to go on with their lives as if they would never face any consequence.

The verse poses a rhetorical question to make the listener realize a fundamental reality: no matter how long these people are given enjoyment in this world — whether it be decades or even centuries — this extended period of respite will not benefit them at all when the promised punishment finally descends upon them. The temporary pleasures of this life, no matter how long they last, are utterly worthless when faced with the inevitable divine justice.

This verse establishes a powerful argument against those who are deceived by the delay of punishment. Some people mistakenly think that when they see wrongdoers prospering and living long, comfortable lives, it means Allah is pleased with them or that there will be no reckoning. The Qur'an repeatedly warns us not to be deceived by the temporary enjoyment of this world. Every breath we take is a gift from Allah, and every day we live is a chance to turn back to Him. The disbelievers of Makkah were given years and years — yet all that time only increased their accountability and the weight of their rejection.

For the believer, this verse carries a beautiful lesson: do not envy those who seem to have everything in this world while neglecting their Creator. Their enjoyment is temporary, and their end is with the One who never fails to fulfill His promise. Instead, be grateful for the gift of faith, which is the greatest blessing of all — for faith is what remains when everything else fades away.

Let this verse inspire you to make every moment count. Do not wait for old age to reform your ways, and do not assume that tomorrow is guaranteed. The wise person is the one who lives each day as if it could be their last, seeking Allah's pleasure and preparing for the meeting with Him. For when the punishment comes — whether in this world or the next — no amount of past enjoyment will be of any avail. But for those who believe and do righteous deeds, their reward is eternal and never-ending.
