Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Yasta'jilūn (يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ): They hasten or seek to bring something forward quickly. It implies impatience and a demand for immediate fulfillment of a threat.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse addresses the disbelievers who, upon hearing the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) warn them of Allah's punishment, reacted with mockery and impatience. They would say: "When will this punishment come? Why do you keep threatening us?" Their attitude was not one of sincere inquiry but of derision and disbelief.

Allah, in His infinite wisdom and mercy, responds to their arrogance with a rhetorical question: "Do they really seek to hasten Our punishment?" The question is meant to expose their foolishness and lack of foresight. They are demanding something that would bring about their own destruction—a punishment that, if it were to descend upon them, would leave no chance for repentance or escape.

The verse subtly reminds them—and all of humanity—that Allah's delay in sending punishment is not a sign of weakness or neglect. Rather, it is a manifestation of His patience, giving them time to reflect, repent, and mend their ways. Their haste for punishment only reveals their ignorance of the consequences and their failure to grasp the gravity of what they are asking for.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, ponder this profound truth: Allah's mercy is vast, and His patience is beyond measure. He does not rush to punish, even when His servants rebel against Him. Instead, He opens the doors of repentance and forgiveness, waiting for His servants to turn back to Him.

How often do we, too, act hastily in our lives—demanding immediate results, questioning divine wisdom, or even mocking what we do not understand? This verse invites us to pause, reflect, and trust in Allah's perfect timing. The One who created us knows what is best for us, and His plan is always wiser than our desires.

Let this be a gentle reminder: instead of hastening toward what may harm us, let us hasten toward what benefits us—seeking Allah's guidance, embracing His mercy, and living a life of gratitude and obedience. For indeed, the punishment of Allah is real, but His mercy precedes it for those who seek it sincerely.

203فَيَقُولُوا هَلْ نَحْنُ مُنظَرُونَ
And they will say, "May we be reprieved?"
204أَفَبِعَذَابِنَا يَسْتَعْجِلُونَ

205أَفَرَأَيْتَ إِن مَّتَّعْنَاهُمْ سِنِينَ
Then have you considered if We gave them enjoyment for years
