Word Meanings:

  • Thumma (ثُمَّ): Then, indicating sequence and a subsequent event.
  • Jā'ahum (جَاءَهُمْ): Came to them, i.e., overtook them and befell them.
  • Mā kānū yū'adūn (مَا كَانُوا يُوعَدُونَ): What they were promised — referring to the punishment and torment that Allah had warned them of through His messengers.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse continues the discourse addressing the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and, through him, all who reflect. Allah poses a rhetorical question: if We granted these disbelievers enjoyment of life for many long years — allowing them to eat, drink, prosper, and delay their appointed ends — then, after all that respite, the promised punishment suddenly came upon them, what would their prolonged enjoyment avail them? Nothing whatsoever. The "promise" here refers to the divine chastisement that the messengers warned their peoples about — the very torment that was destined for them on account of their denial and arrogance.

The verse underscores a profound truth: the delay in punishment is not a sign of neglect or approval. Rather, it is a manifestation of Allah's mercy and patience, giving people every opportunity to repent and return to Him. But when the appointed time arrives, no power on earth can repel it. The long years of comfort and luxury become a witness against them, not a shield to protect them. Their worldly pleasures vanish in an instant, and they are left face-to-face with the reality they once mocked and dismissed.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, pause and ponder: how many people today live in heedlessness, deceived by the length of their lives and the abundance of their provisions? They imagine that because punishment has not yet come, it will never come. But this verse awakens the heart to the certainty of Allah's promise. The Qur'an repeatedly reminds us that the Hereafter is nearer to each of us than our own shadow. Every breath we take brings us closer to that inevitable meeting.

This is not a message of fear alone — it is a message of hope and mercy. Because the door of repentance remains open until the very moment the punishment arrives. Allah, in His infinite kindness, has delayed the chastisement precisely so that you may turn back to Him. He loves to forgive, and He delights in the return of His servant. So do not let the fleeting pleasures of this world deceive you. Seize this moment, before the promise comes to pass, and return to your Lord with a sincere heart. For when that day arrives — and arrive it will — no amount of regret or pleading will avail. But today, right now, His mercy is within your reach. Will you not take it?
