Word Meanings:

  • فَجُمِعَ (So were gathered): The act of assembling and bringing together a group of people in one place.
  • السَّحَرَةُ (the sorcerers): The magicians and illusionists who practiced the art of trickery and deception.
  • لِمِيقَاتِ (for an appointed time): A specific, fixed moment that was predetermined and agreed upon.
  • يَوْمٍ مَّعْلُومٍ (a known day): A day that was well-known and recognized by all—the day of festivity and adornment.

Explanation of the Verse:

After the confrontation between Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) and Pharaoh reached its peak, and Musa challenged Pharaoh to bring forth his best sorcerers to prove which side held the truth, Pharaoh accepted the challenge with arrogance and pride. He then issued a royal decree to gather every skilled sorcerer from across his vast kingdom. These sorcerers were assembled and brought before Pharaoh, and a specific time was set for this great contest—a day that was widely known among the people: the day of their grand festival, when they would adorn themselves, take a break from their daily labors, and gather together in large crowds. This was the day of their annual celebration, and Pharaoh chose it deliberately so that the maximum number of people would witness the event, hoping that the sorcerers would defeat Musa and thus crush the message of monotheism once and for all. The people were encouraged to attend in large numbers, as Pharaoh and his court were confident that the sorcerers' magic would prevail, and they wanted the entire nation to see what they believed would be the humiliation of Musa and his Lord.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse teaches us a profound lesson about the nature of truth versus falsehood. Pharaoh gathered all his forces, mobilized every resource, and prepared a grand spectacle to defeat the truth—yet the outcome was entirely contrary to his expectations. When the day arrived, Allah's power overwhelmed the magic of the sorcerers, and the truth triumphed in the most dramatic fashion. This is a timeless reminder for every believer: no matter how powerful the forces of falsehood may appear, no matter how many resources they gather or how grand their plans may be, the truth of Allah will always prevail. The Qur'an repeatedly assures us that falsehood is bound to vanish, while truth stands firm. So, dear reader, never be intimidated by the apparent strength of those who oppose the message of Islam. Their gatherings, their schemes, and their preparations are all within Allah's knowledge and control. Place your trust in Allah, stand firm upon the truth, and know that the final victory belongs to the believers—just as it did for Musa and his followers on that blessed day of festivity.
