Word Meanings:
- Qeela lil-nas — It was said to the people.
- Hal antum mujtami‘oon — Are you going to gather together?
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse describes the scene after Pharaoh’s magicians had been assembled and a specific time was set for the great confrontation with Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him). The day chosen was the festival day, at mid-morning, when people would be free from their work and able to gather in large numbers.
Pharaoh, in his arrogance and cunning, ordered that the people be urged and encouraged to come out and witness the event. He wanted a huge crowd to attend, hoping that the sheer number of spectators would intimidate Musa and that the magicians—backed by the crowd’s excitement—would defeat him publicly. The call went out among the people: "Are you all going to gather together?"—an invitation and a prompting for everyone to come and see what would happen.
This gathering was not merely for entertainment; it was a carefully staged spectacle designed to crush the message of truth through psychological pressure and public humiliation. Pharaoh wanted to demonstrate his power and prove that his magicians were superior to the miracles of Musa, thereby keeping his people in submission and disbelief.
A Da‘wah Reflection:
This scene reminds us of a profound truth: the enemies of truth throughout history have always tried to use crowds, noise, and spectacle to overwhelm the voice of faith. They gather people, stage events, and create an atmosphere of intimidation—yet the outcome is always determined by Allah, not by numbers or propaganda.
When the believers face such trials, they must remember that Allah’s help is with them, even when the whole world seems to be gathered against them. The gathering of the people on that day, which Pharaoh intended as a display of his power, became the very stage upon which Allah demonstrated His supremacy and humiliated the falsehood of Pharaoh and his magicians.
So, dear reader, never fear the crowds of falsehood, nor be impressed by their numbers or their noise. Truth stands firm, and Allah’s promise is true: "And Allah will certainly aid those who aid His cause." (Al-Hajj 22:40). The same Allah who turned that gathering into a victory for Musa and a defeat for Pharaoh is alive today, watching over His righteous servants. Place your trust in Him, and He will never abandon you.
