Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Kunūz (كُنُوزٍ): Treasures, hoarded wealth — gold, silver, and other precious possessions.
- Maqām Karīm (مَقَامٍ كَرِيمٍ): A noble, honorable place of residence — beautiful palaces, splendid homes, and dignified stations.
Explanation of the Verse:
In this verse, Allah Almighty recounts the blessings He had bestowed upon Pharaoh and his people — blessings that they took for granted and became arrogant because of. They possessed treasures: vast hoards of gold, silver, and other riches that they had amassed and stored away. They also enjoyed a noble station: magnificent palaces, luxurious dwellings, and grand assemblies that reflected their power and prestige.
Yet despite all this wealth and splendor, they rejected the message of Allah and oppressed the Children of Israel. They thought their riches and their lofty positions would protect them forever — but they were gravely mistaken. Allah, in His perfect justice, stripped them of all these blessings in a single moment. Their treasures did not benefit them, their palaces did not shelter them, and their honor turned to humiliation as they were drowned in the sea.
This verse serves as a profound reminder that worldly wealth and status are fleeting. They are tests from Allah, not guarantees of His pleasure. How many powerful nations and wealthy tyrants have come and gone, leaving nothing behind but their legacy of arrogance? The believer should look at these treasures and stations not with envy, but with a heart that recognizes their true value — as temporary comforts that can vanish in an instant.
The lesson here is timeless: true honor lies not in palaces and gold, but in faith, humility, and obedience to Allah. When we attach our hearts to the Creator rather than to creation, we find a treasure that never diminishes and a station that never falls. Let this verse inspire us to use whatever wealth or position Allah grants us — no matter how small — in ways that please Him, for that is the only investment that yields eternal returns.
