Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Jannāt (جَنَّاتٍ): Lush gardens and orchards with abundant trees and greenery.
- ʿUyūn (عُيُونٍ): Springs of flowing water, gushing from the earth.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the narrative of Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him) and the fate of Pharaoh and his people. After the prolonged conflict between Musa and Pharaoh—marked by the miracles of the staff and the shining hand, the nine signs, and Pharaoh’s persistent arrogance and rejection of the truth—Allah (Exalted be He) finally brought down His decree. The verse states: “So We brought them out of gardens and springs.” This refers to Allah’s divine action of expelling Pharaoh and his people from the land of Egypt, which was adorned with magnificent gardens, flowing springs of water, and all the luxuries they had accumulated. They were forced to leave behind their wealth, their palaces, and their comforts—not as a voluntary migration, but as a humiliating departure in pursuit of Musa and the Children of Israel, which ultimately led to their destruction in the sea.
The verse highlights a profound truth: the very blessings that Pharaoh and his people enjoyed—the gardens and springs—became the means of their trial and downfall. They were so attached to these worldly pleasures that they refused to acknowledge the truth brought by Musa, and in their arrogance, they chased after the believers, only to face Allah’s punishment. Their exit from these blessings was not a dignified farewell but a forced removal, marking the end of their power and the beginning of their ruin.
A Call to Reflection:
This verse serves as a timeless reminder for every soul: worldly blessings—wealth, comfort, status, and beauty—are not permanent. They are a test from Allah, and those who become arrogant and reject His guidance may find themselves stripped of these very blessings in an instant. Pharaoh had everything—gardens, springs, treasures, and a mighty kingdom—yet none of it availed him when Allah’s decree came. How many people today are deceived by their possessions, their homes, and their luxuries, believing they are secure? Let this verse awaken the heart: true security lies not in what we own, but in our obedience to Allah and our readiness to submit to His will. The gardens and springs of this world are fleeting; the gardens of Paradise are eternal. So turn to Allah before you are turned away from what you love, and let your gratitude for His blessings be shown through faith and righteousness.
