Word Meanings:
- يُنَادِيهِمْ (yunādīhim): He calls out to them — i.e., Allah calling the disbelievers on the Day of Resurrection.
- مَاذَا أَجَبْتُمُ (mādhā ajabtum): What did you answer/reply with? — i.e., what response did you give?
- الْمُرْسَلِينَ (al-mursalīn): The Messengers — the prophets sent by Allah to guide humanity.
Explanation of the Verse:
On that awesome Day — the Day of Resurrection — Allah, the Almighty, will call out to the polytheists and those who rejected the truth, and He will ask them a question that will pierce their very souls: "What did you answer the Messengers?"
This is a question of accountability and rebuke. It is not a question seeking information, for Allah knows all things. Rather, it is a question that exposes their ingratitude and negligence. The Messengers came to them with clear proofs, guidance, and the light of truth. They called them to worship Allah alone, to believe in His Oneness, to follow His commandments, and to prepare for this very Day. Yet, how did they respond? Did they accept the call? Did they follow the guidance? Or did they mock, reject, and turn away?
The verse highlights the gravity of that moment — when every soul will be confronted with its deeds and its response to the divine message. The disbelievers will have no answer on that Day except confusion and regret. They will stand humiliated, unable to utter a single word of defense, because the truth will be undeniable.
This call is a reminder that the Messengers were not sent in vain. Their mission was a mercy to humanity, and every person who received their message will be asked about how they responded to it. The question is not merely about belief in the past — it is a call to reflect now, before that Day arrives, on how we are responding to the guidance that has reached us.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is not only about the disbelievers of the past — it is a mirror for every one of us. Today, the message of the Messengers has reached you through the Qur'an and the Sunnah. The question is: How are you answering that call? Are you embracing it with an open heart, or are you neglecting it while busy with the distractions of this world?
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is the final Messenger, and his message is for all of humanity until the end of time. Every prayer you pray, every good deed you do, every step you take toward Allah — that is your answer to the Messengers. And every sin you persist in, every act of disobedience, every moment of heedlessness — that too is an answer, but one you will regret on that Day.
Let this verse awaken your heart. Do not wait until that Day when the question is asked and it is too late to respond. Answer the call of the Messengers now — through faith, through obedience, and through love for Allah and His Messenger. For on that Day, the only successful ones will be those who can say: "We believed, we obeyed, and we followed the light that was sent to us."
May Allah make us among those who respond to His call with sincerity and righteousness, and may He grant us the joy of seeing His Messenger ﷺ on that Day as a witness for us, not against us. Ameen.
