Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Lut (لوطًا): The Prophet Lot, peace be upon him, who lived in the towns of Sodom and Gomorrah.
- Al-Ghabireen (الْغَابِرِينَ): Those who remain behind, i.e., those who stay and are destroyed with the disbelievers.
Tafsir (Explanation):
When the angels came to Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham), peace be upon him, as honored guests with a mission to destroy the wicked people of Lot's town, Ibrahim—out of his deep compassion and protective care for the believers—said to them: "Indeed, in that town is Lot." He was concerned, fearing that the punishment might engulf his righteous nephew along with the corrupt.
The angels reassured him with firm knowledge and divine certainty: "We know better who is in it." They were not unaware of Lot's presence; rather, they were sent with precise knowledge from Allah. They then gave him the glad tidings: "We will surely save him and his family from the destruction that will befall the town, except his wife—she will be among those who remain behind and perish."
This verse carries profound lessons for every believer. First, it shows the beautiful character of Ibrahim—a man who cared deeply for the righteous, even pleading for them in times of trial. Second, it affirms Allah's perfect justice: He never punishes the innocent with the guilty. The believers are always distinguished and protected, even amidst the most severe calamities. Third, it warns that closeness to a righteous person does not guarantee salvation if one's own heart is corrupt—as seen in Lot's wife, who chose disbelief and betrayal, and thus shared the fate of the wicked.
Dear reader, reflect on this divine mercy: Allah knows every sincere heart, and He will never let the righteous be lost in the destruction of the wicked. If you strive to be among the people of faith and righteousness, then know that Allah's protection and salvation are guaranteed for you—just as He saved His prophet Lot and his family. Let this verse strengthen your trust in Allah and your hope in His justice, and let it remind you to always stand firm on the path of truth, regardless of the corruption around you.
