Explanation of the Verse:
Prophet Zakariyyā (peace be upon him), upon receiving the glad tidings of a son despite his old age and his wife’s barrenness, did not doubt the power of Allah. Rather, he sought a sign that would bring him joy and certainty, and that would mark the beginning of this great blessing. He humbly prayed: *"My Lord, grant me a sign."* Allah responded: *"Your sign is that you will not speak to people for three days except by gesture."* This was not a punishment, but a miracle—his tongue would be restrained from speaking to people while he remained perfectly healthy and sound, yet he would still be able to remember Allah and glorify Him. This silence was a divine sign confirming the truth of the glad tidings and giving him a special opportunity to devote himself wholly to worship. Allah then instructed him: *"And remember your Lord much and glorify Him in the evening and the early morning."* This command highlights the importance of constant remembrance of Allah, especially during the blessed times of the early morning and the late afternoon—times when the heart is calm and the soul is more receptive to devotion.
A Daʿwah Reflection:
This verse teaches us a profound lesson: when Allah grants us a blessing or answers our prayers, the best response is not merely to celebrate, but to increase our remembrance and gratitude to Him. Zakariyyā’s sign was a period of silence from worldly talk, yet his tongue was free for the remembrance of Allah. This shows us that true communication with Allah is far more valuable than any worldly conversation. It also reminds us that trials, even those that seem restrictive, can be opportunities for spiritual growth. When we face moments of difficulty or even moments of joy, let us turn to Allah with abundant remembrance, glorifying Him in the mornings and evenings, for in His remembrance do hearts find true peace. This is the path of the prophets—a path of gratitude, patience, and unwavering connection to the Creator. May we all strive to fill our days with the remembrance of Allah, making our tongues moist with His praise and our hearts radiant with His love.
