And whatever you give for interest to increase within the wealth of people will not increase with Allah. But what you give in zakah, desiring the countenance of Allah - those are the multipliers.

Word Meanings:

  • Riba (ربًا): An increase or excess given on a loan or exchange, specifically the prohibited interest or usury.
  • Li-yarbuwa (ليربو): So that it may grow and increase.
  • Zakah (زكاة): Purifying alms or charity given to those entitled to it.
  • Wajh Allah (وجه الله): The Face of Allah, meaning seeking His pleasure and reward sincerely.
  • Al-Mud'ifun (المضعفون): Those whose rewards are multiplied manifold.

Tafsir (Explanation):

This noble verse draws a clear distinction between two types of giving and their outcomes in the sight of Allah. The first type is giving money as a loan or gift with the intention of receiving back more than what was given — this is the essence of riba (usury/interest). People engage in such transactions hoping to see their wealth grow in this world, but Allah declares that this kind of increase brings no growth or blessing with Him. In fact, it is wiped out of barakah (divine blessing) and carries no reward in the Hereafter. The apparent increase in wealth is deceptive; it is devoid of spiritual benefit and may even lead to its destruction.

The second type is giving zakah and voluntary charity to those in need, purely seeking the Face of Allah — not for show, not for praise, not for any worldly return. This is the giving that truly grows. Allah multiplies it manifold, increasing it in this world through blessing and in the Hereafter through immense rewards. Such people are described as "al-mud'ifun" — those whose good deeds are multiplied many times over, like a single grain that sprouts into seven ears, each bearing a hundred grains.

This verse is a profound invitation to reflect on the nature of true prosperity. The one who seeks increase through riba is chasing a mirage — he may gain in this fleeting world but loses in the eternal one. The one who gives sincerely for Allah's sake, however, has made a transaction with the Lord of the Heavens and the Earth, and no transaction with Allah ever fails. Allah does not need our wealth, but He has made charity a means for us to purify our souls, elevate our ranks, and draw closer to Him.

Dear believer, let this verse inspire you to purify your wealth through sincere giving. When you give for the sake of Allah, you are not losing — you are investing in a bank that never fails, with returns that multiply beyond your imagination. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Charity does not decrease wealth." So open your hand in giving, seek the Face of Allah, and watch how He multiplies your provision in ways you never expected. This is the path of the successful, the path of those who understand that true increase lies not in what we hoard, but in what we give for the pleasure of our Lord.

📜 Verse 37-41 — Ar-Rum

Do they not see that Allah extends provision for whom He wills and restricts [it]? Indeed, in that are signs for a people who believe.
So give the relative his right, as well as the needy and the traveler. That is best for those who desire the countenance of Allah, and it is they who will be the successful.
And whatever you give for interest to increase within the wealth of people will not increase with Allah. But what you give in zakah, desiring the countenance of Allah - those are the multipliers.
Allah is the one who created you, then provided for you, then will cause you to die, and then will give you life. Are there any of your "partners" who does anything of that? Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him.
Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].
