Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Mathal (مَثَل): A parable, example, or illustration used to clarify a concept and make it comprehensible.
- Āyah (آيَة): A sign, miracle, or proof — here referring to any evidence or miracle brought to demonstrate the truth of the Prophet’s message.
- Mubṭilūn (مُبْطِلُونَ): Those who follow falsehood, people of vanity, or those who invalidate the truth with their rejection.
Tafsir (Explanation):
Indeed, Allah — in His infinite mercy and wisdom — has presented in this magnificent Qur’an every kind of parable, example, and illustration for humanity. These parables are not random stories; they are profound lessons that illuminate the path between truth and falsehood, between guidance and misguidance. Through them, Allah establishes His conclusive argument upon all of creation, making the truth crystal clear for anyone who seeks it with an open heart. The Qur’an addresses the intellect, stirs the conscience, and appeals to the pure human nature (fiṭrah) that recognizes its Lord.
Yet, despite this overwhelming clarity, the reality remains that even if you — O Messenger — were to bring the disbelievers any miracle or sign, no matter how extraordinary, they would still turn away in arrogance and stubbornness. They would say to you and your followers: “You are nothing but people of falsehood!” This is not because the truth is unclear to them, but because their hearts are sealed with pride and their minds are clouded by prejudice. They have made their decision to reject, and no amount of evidence will change their stance.
This verse carries a profound lesson for every believer: the guidance of hearts is not in our hands — it is solely in the Hands of Allah. Our duty is to convey the message with sincerity and wisdom, to present the truth beautifully and clearly, and to leave the outcome to Allah. Do not be disheartened when you see people reject the truth despite its clarity, for this was the experience of the greatest of messengers, and it is a test of your patience and steadfastness.
At the same time, this verse is an invitation to reflect: How blessed are those who respond to the parables of the Qur’an with humility and openness! For them, every example becomes a light that illuminates their path to Allah. The Qur’an is not merely a book to be recited — it is a living guide, a healing for the hearts, and a mercy for those who truly ponder its meanings. Let us not be among those who see the signs yet refuse to see, but rather among those who say: “We hear and we obey. Guide us to the straight path.”
