Translation — Tafsir
Key Words and Their Meanings:
- Yatba'u (يَطْبَعُ): To seal or stamp, leaving an imprint that closes something off completely.
- Qulub (قُلُوبِ): Hearts — in the Qur'anic context, the seat of intellect, understanding, and spiritual perception.
- La ya'lamun (لَا يَعْلَمُونَ): Those who do not know — referring to those who refuse to acknowledge the truth of Allah's signs and His Oneness.
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse concludes the previous discussion about those who stubbornly reject the signs of Allah despite witnessing clear proofs. Just as Allah described the sealing of hearts for those who turned away from His signs, He now states that this is His established way: He places a seal upon the hearts of those who do not seek knowledge of the truth and who deliberately ignore the reality of His Oneness and the messages of His prophets.
The "sealing" here is not an arbitrary punishment but a natural consequence of persistent arrogance and refusal to learn. When a person continuously rejects the truth, their heart becomes hardened, and eventually, they lose the ability to perceive guidance altogether. This is a spiritual reality: the more one turns away from Allah, the more their heart becomes closed to His light. The verse serves as a grave warning — knowledge of Allah and His signs is a mercy, and neglecting it leads to a state where even the clearest evidence becomes invisible to the heart.
A Call to Reflection and Action:
Dear reader, this verse is a profound reminder of the value of knowledge and open-heartedness. Allah has placed countless signs in the universe and in your own soul — the rising of the sun, the rhythm of your breath, the order of the cosmos — all pointing to His greatness. Do not let your heart become sealed by indifference or pride. Seek knowledge sincerely, ask Allah to open your chest to the truth, and respond to His signs with humility and gratitude. The door of repentance is always open, and no heart is beyond His mercy as long as it beats with the desire to know Him. Let this verse inspire you to be among those who reflect, learn, and draw closer to their Creator — for the one whose heart is alive with faith finds peace, purpose, and eternal success.
