Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Ma'dhiratuhum (مَعْذِرَتُهُمْ): Their excuses, justifications, or apologies they might present to defend themselves.
- Yusta'tabūn (يُسْتَعْتَبُونَ): They are asked to seek God's pleasure through repentance and obedience; the term implies being invited to make amends or appease the offended party.
Tafsir (Explanation):
On that Day—the Day when Allah resurrects all of creation for judgment and recompense—the wrongdoers who persisted in disbelief, polytheism, and sin will find that their excuses are utterly useless. No apology, no justification, no attempt to explain away their deeds will benefit them in the slightest. The door of repentance that was wide open in the worldly life will have been firmly shut, for the time for turning back has passed. Neither will they be asked to appease their Lord through repentance and obedience, as they were repeatedly invited to do during their earthly existence. The call to return to Allah, to seek His forgiveness, and to reform their ways was made to them time and again in the life of this world—through prophets, scriptures, and the signs of creation—yet they turned away in arrogance. Now, on the Day of Judgment, that opportunity is gone forever. They will not be told, "Go back and make amends," nor will they be given another chance to earn Allah's pleasure. Instead, they will face the full, just consequences of their deeds, for Allah's justice is perfect and His recompense is certain.
A Da'wah Reflection:
This verse carries a profound and urgent message for every soul: the time to act is now, not tomorrow. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has kept the door of repentance open for us in this life—every moment we breathe is an opportunity to turn back to Him, to seek His forgiveness, and to mend our ways. How often do we delay, thinking we have plenty of time? How often do we assume we can repent at the last moment? This verse reminds us that the Hereafter is not the place for excuses or second chances; it is the place of recompense. So seize this precious gift of life, dear reader, and rush to your Lord with a sincere heart. Repent today, pray today, give charity today, and draw closer to Allah today—for tomorrow may never come, and on that Day, no excuse will avail you. Let this be the moment you turn to your Creator, for He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful, and He loves those who return to Him.
