Surah Al-Ahzab — Verse 40

Explanation of the Verse:

The Prophet had adopted Zayd ibn Hārithah as his son, a common practice in pre-Islamic Arabia. When Zayd divorced his wife, Zaynab bint Jahsh, some people questioned the Prophet’s marriage to her, thinking that since Zayd was his adopted son, his wife would be like a daughter-in-law and therefore forbidden to him.

Allah, the Most High, clarifies this misconception: Muhammad (peace be upon him) is not the biological father of any of your men. He did not father Zayd or any other adult male among the believers. Therefore, the marriage to Zaynab was entirely lawful, as Zayd was not his real son.

The verse then elevates the Prophet’s true status: he is the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets. This means that with him, prophethood has come to an end. No prophet will come after him, and his message is the final and complete revelation from Allah. Even when Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) returns at the end of time, he will not bring a new law but will follow the law of Muhammad (peace be upon him), praying toward the same qiblah and ruling by the Qur’an.
