Key Words and Their Meanings:

  • Ādhaw (آذَوْا): They harmed or caused hurt through words or actions.
  • Barra’a (بَرَّأَهُ): He declared him free and innocent, clearing him of all false accusations.
  • Wajīhan (وَجِيهًا): One of high standing, honor, and intercessory power with Allah—a person whose word carries weight and whose rank is elevated.

Explanation of the Verse:

O you who have truly believed in Allah and His Messenger and committed yourselves to His guidance, do not cause harm to your Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) through any word or deed, and do not follow the example of those who hurt Prophet Musa (Moses, peace be upon him). When Musa was falsely accused—whether by those who slandered his honor, spread lies about his character, or made baseless claims against him—Allah Himself came to his defense and cleared him of every falsehood they uttered. His innocence became manifest and undeniable, and the slanderers were left in disgrace.

And Musa was, in Allah’s sight, a man of great dignity and honor—so exalted that his requests were never turned away, and his standing before his Lord was unmatched. This was the reward of his patience and unwavering trust in Allah when faced with the cruelty of unjust words.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

This verse is a profound lesson for every believer: how sacred is the honor of Allah’s prophets, and how severely Allah defends those who are wronged for His sake. If Allah defended Musa against the harm of his people, how much more does He love and protect His final Messenger, Muhammad (peace be upon him)? The believers are thus urged to guard their tongues and hearts, to show the utmost respect and love for the Prophet, and to never repeat the mistakes of those who hurt Allah’s chosen servants.

Let this also be a comfort to every believer who is wronged or slandered: Allah sees all, and He is the ultimate Defender of the innocent. If you are patient and place your trust in Him, He will raise your rank, just as He raised Musa’s, and He will make your truth clear to all. So hold fast to good character, protect the honor of others, and love the Prophet as he deserves—for that love is the key to Allah’s mercy and the path to His eternal reward.

And they will say, "Our Lord, indeed we obeyed our masters and our dignitaries, and they led us astray from the [right] way.
68رَبَّنَا آتِهِمْ ضِعْفَيْنِ مِنَ الْعَذَابِ وَالْعَنْهُمْ لَعْنًا كَبِيرًا
Our Lord, give them double the punishment and curse them with a great curse."
O you who have believed, be not like those who abused Moses; then Allah cleared him of what they said. And he, in the sight of Allah, was distinguished.
70يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا اتَّقُوا اللَّهَ وَقُولُوا قَوْلًا سَدِيدًا
O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice.
He will [then] amend for you your deeds and forgive you your sins. And whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has certainly attained a great attainment.
