But they turned away [refusing], so We sent upon them the flood of the dam, and We replaced their two [fields of] gardens with gardens of bitter fruit, tamarisks and something of sparse lote trees.

Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • Al-'Arim (الْعَرِمِ): The dam that was built between two mountains to hold back water for irrigation. The "flood of Al-'Arim" refers to the catastrophic flood that broke through this dam, destroying it completely.
  • Ukul khamt (أُكُلٍ خَمْطٍ): Bitter, foul-tasting fruit; a tree whose fruit is extremely unpleasant and inedible.
  • Athl (أَثْلٍ): Tamarisk trees — a type of tree that bears no fruit at all.
  • Sidr (سِدْرٍ): Christ's thorn / lote tree, which normally produces sweet berries (nabq), but here it was sparse and of poor quality.

Explanation of the Verse:

After the people of Sheba turned away from gratitude to Allah and rejected His blessings, they said arrogantly: "We do not recognize any favor from Allah upon us — tell your Lord to withhold these blessings if He can!" So Allah punished them with the exact opposite of what they had. He sent upon them the flood of the mighty dam — a torrent so powerful and destructive that it shattered their great engineering marvel, swept away their fertile lands, and drowned their gardens.

And in place of their two beautiful, lush gardens filled with abundant fruit, Allah gave them two gardens of bitter, foul-tasting fruit, along with tamarisk trees that bore nothing at all, and only a few scattered lote trees — a stark contrast to the abundance they once enjoyed. Their paradise became a wasteland; their sweetness turned to bitterness; their plenty turned to scarcity.

This was not random punishment — it was the direct consequence of their ingratitude and arrogance. They had every blessing, yet they denied the Giver. They had every sign, yet they turned away. So Allah exchanged their good for evil, their sweetness for bitterness, and their lush gardens for thorny, barren land. And Allah makes clear that this severe recompense is reserved only for those who are deeply ungrateful — those who persist in disbelief and ingratitude despite clear signs and abundant blessings.

A Call to Reflection:

Dear reader, look at this story and see how quickly blessings can vanish when we take them for granted. The people of Sheba had what many nations dream of — fertile land, flowing water, abundant harvests, and a life of ease. But when they forgot the Source of these blessings and turned away in arrogance, their entire world collapsed in an instant.

This is a timeless lesson for every one of us. Every breath you take, every meal you eat, every drop of water you drink — these are not accidents. They are gifts from Allah, the Most Merciful, who sustains you every single moment. Do you thank Him? Do you acknowledge His favors? Or do you live as though you created yourself and provided for yourself?

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) taught us that gratitude is not just with the tongue — it is with the heart, the limbs, and the actions. When you use Allah's blessings to worship Him, to help others, and to live righteously, you are showing true gratitude. And Allah promises: "If you are grateful, I will surely increase you in favor" (Ibrahim 14:7).

So before you lose what you have, hold on to it with the strongest rope — gratitude to Allah. Thank Him for your health, your family, your provision, and your faith. And let that gratitude transform into obedience and love for Him. For the One who gave you everything can take it away in the blink of an eye — but the One who is Most Merciful also loves to give more to those who are thankful. Choose gratitude today, and watch how your blessings multiply beyond your imagination.

📜 Verse 14-18 — Saba

And when We decreed for Solomon death, nothing indicated to the jinn his death except a creature of the earth eating his staff. But when he fell, it became clear to the jinn that if they had known the unseen, they would not have remained in humiliating punishment.
There was for [the tribe of] Saba' in their dwelling place a sign: two [fields of] gardens on the right and on the left. [They were told], "Eat from the provisions of your Lord and be grateful to Him. A good land [have you], and a forgiving Lord."
But they turned away [refusing], so We sent upon them the flood of the dam, and We replaced their two [fields of] gardens with gardens of bitter fruit, tamarisks and something of sparse lote trees.
[By] that We repaid them because they disbelieved. And do We [thus] repay except the ungrateful?
And We placed between them and the cities which We had blessed [many] visible cities. And We determined between them the [distances of] journey, [saying], "Travel between them by night or day in safety."
