Word Meanings:

  • "وَحِيلَ بَيْنَهُمْ" — A barrier was placed between them, preventing them from attaining what they desire.
  • "مَا يَشْتَهُونَ" — What they long for: repentance, faith, and return to the worldly life to do good deeds.
  • "أَشْيَاعِهِم" — Their counterparts and likes from previous disbelieving nations.
  • "شَكٍّ مُّرِيبٍ" — A doubt that causes unease, suspicion, and restlessness in the heart.

Explanation of the Verse:

On the Day of Judgment, when the disbelievers witness the reality of what they once denied—seeing the Fire, the Reckoning, and the fate of the wicked—they will desperately wish to return to the worldly life to believe, repent, and do righteous deeds. But it will be too late. A firm barrier will be set between them and everything they yearn for: no second chance, no return, no acceptance of faith at that hour. Their pleas will be met with silence, and their hopes will be crushed.

This is not a new punishment; it is exactly what Allah did to their predecessors—the disbelieving nations of old, like ‘Ād, Thamūd, and Pharaoh’s people—who were also denied repentance when death came to them or when the punishment descended. The pattern is consistent: those who reject the truth in life are cut off from it in the end.

Why did they deserve this? Because in the worldly life, they lived in a state of "شَكٍّ مُّرِيبٍ" — a deep, unsettling doubt about the messages of the prophets, the oneness of Allah, and the reality of the Resurrection. Their doubt was not a simple uncertainty that led them to seek truth; rather, it was a corrosive suspicion that bred arrogance, mockery, and stubborn denial. They doubted the very things that could have saved them, and so they reaped the fruit of their own skepticism.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

Dear reader, this verse is a profound reminder that the door of repentance is open *now*—in this life, in this very moment—but it will not remain open forever. Allah, in His infinite mercy, does not close the door of return until the soul reaches the throat or the Hour arrives. So do not let doubt creep into your heart about the truth of Islam, the Oneness of Allah, or the certainty of the Hereafter. Doubt is a poison that paralyzes the soul and leads to ruin. Instead, seek certainty through sincere reflection, through the Qur’an, and through the signs of Allah spread across the universe and within yourself.

The disbelievers wished for what they had rejected; do not let yourself be among those who wish only when it is too late. Embrace faith today, act upon it, and taste the sweetness of certainty. For Allah’s mercy is vast, and His door of forgiveness is wide open—but only for those who turn to Him before the barrier is set.

📜 Verse 52-54 — Saba

52وَقَالُوا آمَنَّا بِهِ وَأَنَّىٰ لَهُمُ التَّنَاوُشُ مِن مَّكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ
And they will [then] say, "We believe in it!" But how for them will be the taking [of faith] from a place far away?
53وَقَدْ كَفَرُوا بِهِ مِن قَبْلُ ۖ وَيَقْذِفُونَ بِالْغَيْبِ مِن مَّكَانٍ بَعِيدٍ
And they had already disbelieved in it before and would assault the unseen from a place far away.
And prevention will be placed between them and what they desire, as was done with their kind before. Indeed, they were in disquieting denial.
