Word Meanings:

  • "Nabadhnahu" (فَنَبَذْنَاهُ): We cast him forth or threw him out.
  • "Al-'Arā' (بِالْعَرَاءِ): The open, bare land — a place with no trees, buildings, or any form of shelter.
  • "Saqīm (سَقِيمٌ): Ill, sick, weak in body and spirit.

Explanation of the Verse:

After Prophet Yunus (Jonah, peace be upon him) called upon his Lord from the depths of the darkness — the darkness of the night, the sea, and the belly of the whale — Allah responded to his supplication and saved him. In this verse, Allah tells us that He cast him forth from the belly of the whale onto a barren, open stretch of land, completely devoid of any vegetation, trees, or structures. There was no shade to protect him, no shelter to comfort him, and no provision to sustain him.

At that moment, Yunus (peace be upon him) was in a state of severe illness and weakness. His body had been weakened by his prolonged stay in the cramped, dark confines of the whale's belly, and his spirit was burdened by the grief and distress of what had happened with his people, as well as the hardship he had endured. Yet, despite this utter vulnerability — lying on bare earth, sick and alone — Allah's mercy surrounded him. It was from this very point of helplessness that his recovery and renewed mission began.

A Call to Reflection and Faith:

This verse is a profound reminder of Allah's absolute power and His boundless mercy. When Yunus (peace be upon him) was at his lowest point — sick, exposed, and seemingly abandoned on a desolate shore — Allah did not forsake him. Instead, He nurtured him back to health and prepared him for a new chapter of prophethood.

Dear reader, no matter how deep your trials may seem, remember that Allah is always near. The very moment you feel most broken and alone is often the moment His mercy descends upon you most powerfully. Just as He saved His prophet from the darkness of the whale and placed him safely on the earth, He can lift you from your darkest hours and set you upon a path of light. Turn to Him with a sincere heart, as Yunus did, and you will find that His care never fails. The Quran tells us this story not merely as history, but as a living lesson of hope: after every hardship comes relief, and after every storm, His peace.

📜 Verse 143-147 — As-Saffat

And had he not been of those who exalt Allah,
He would have remained inside its belly until the Day they are resurrected.
But We threw him onto the open shore while he was ill.
And We caused to grow over him a gourd vine.
And We sent him to [his people of] a hundred thousand or more.
