Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- لَلَبِثَ (la-labitha): He would have remained/stayed.
- فِي بَطْنِهِ (fee batnihi): Inside its belly (the whale's belly).
- إِلَى يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ (ila yawmi yub'athoon): Until the Day they are resurrected (the Day of Judgment).
Explanation of the Verse:
This verse continues the story of Prophet Yunus (Jonah), peace be upon him, who was swallowed by the great whale after he left his people in anger before Allah's permission. Allah tells us here that had it not been for the mercy and grace that preceded him—namely, his abundant worship, his righteous deeds, and his glorification of Allah while inside the whale's belly, when he called out: "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers" (21:87)—he would have remained trapped inside that whale's belly until the Day of Resurrection. The whale's belly would have become his grave, sealed until the trumpet is blown and all creation is raised from their graves.
This profound statement reveals the immense power of sincere supplication and remembrance of Allah in the darkest of moments. Imagine being in total darkness—the darkness of the sea, the darkness of the whale's interior, and the darkness of the night—yet even there, the light of faith and the sweetness of dhikr (remembrance of Allah) can pierce through and bring about divine rescue. Allah responded to his call and saved him from distress, just as He promises to save every believer who calls upon Him sincerely.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, reflect deeply on this verse. If a single sincere supplication from the depths of a whale's belly could change the course of destiny and transform a prison into a path of salvation, how much more powerful is your du'a when you call upon Allah in your moments of hardship? Never underestimate the value of your worship, your prayers, and your remembrance of Allah—even the ones you think are small. They are your lifeline in this world and your provision in the Hereafter. The Prophet Yunus's story is a timeless reminder that no matter how deep your trials may seem, Allah's mercy is deeper still. Turn to Him, glorify Him, and acknowledge your shortcomings, and you will find that He is always near, always ready to answer. This is the beauty of Islam: a direct connection with the Lord of all worlds, who never abandons His believing servants.
