Translation — Tafsir
Word Meanings:
- Yaqṭīn (يقطين): This refers to the gourd plant (pumpkin/squash). It is a plant with broad leaves, a soft stem, and large fruits that provide shade and nourishment.
Tafsir (Explanation):
After Allah, by His infinite mercy, delivered His Prophet Yunus (Jonah) from the darkness of the whale's belly and cast him onto the barren shore, He did not leave him exposed and helpless. Instead, He caused a gourd tree to grow over him—a plant with wide, cooling leaves that provided shade from the scorching sun, and fruits that he could eat to regain his strength. This was a profound act of divine care: the shade protected his weakened body, and the fruit nourished him after his ordeal. The choice of the gourd is particularly wise, as its broad leaves repel flies and insects, and its fruit is both wholesome and easily digestible—perfect for a person recovering from severe hardship.
This verse beautifully illustrates Allah's comprehensive mercy. He did not merely rescue Yunus from one trial; He prepared for him a complete environment of healing and comfort. The gourd tree served multiple purposes at once: shelter, food, and protection from harm—all in a barren land where nothing seemed to grow. It is a testament to how Allah, when He wills good for His servant, opens doors of provision from places the servant could never imagine.
A Da'wah Reflection:
Dear reader, look at how Allah cared for His prophet in his moment of utter weakness. Yunus had no one with him, no means, and no apparent resources—yet Allah provided for him from the earth itself. This is the same Allah who is with you today. When you feel abandoned, exposed, or broken, remember that the One who caused a gourd to sprout in a desolate land for His servant is fully capable of bringing relief into your life from the most unexpected directions. Your trials are never beyond His reach, and His mercy always follows hardship. Trust Him, turn to Him, and never lose hope—for His care is more detailed and more loving than you can ever imagine. The same Lord who shaded Yunus with a plant is ready to shade you with His grace. Will you not turn to Him and place your affairs in His hands?
