Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • الصَّافُّونَ (As-Saffun): Those who stand in rows/ranks, specifically referring to standing in lines for prayer and worship.

Tafsir (Explanation):

In this noble verse, the angels declare their profound devotion and obedience to Allah. They affirm that they are the ones who stand in ranks — arranged in orderly rows — in humble worship of their Lord. This is a description of their perpetual state of servitude, as they stand in lines before Allah, awaiting His command and engaged in His remembrance.

The verse highlights the angels' complete submission and their constant readiness to worship. They are not merely standing idly; rather, they are positioned in disciplined rows, reflecting the utmost respect, reverence, and order in their devotion. This imagery of standing in ranks also mirrors the manner in which Muslims are encouraged to stand shoulder-to-shoulder in congregational prayer, symbolizing unity, equality, and collective devotion to Allah.

Furthermore, this declaration comes as a response to those who doubted or denied the angels' role and status. It reassures believers that the angels are ever-present, obedient, and engaged in the worship of Allah, and that they take pride in their servitude. This verse also serves as a reminder to humanity: if the angels — who are sinless and ever-obedient — stand in ranks for worship, then how much more should we, as human beings, strive to establish prayer and maintain discipline in our worship?

Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a beautiful lesson for every Muslim. When you stand in prayer, remember that you are not alone — the angels are also standing in ranks, worshipping the same Lord. Your prayer connects you to the heavenly assembly. Let this inspire you to perfect your prayer, to stand with humility, and to cherish every moment of your worship. The angels take pride in their obedience; let us too take pride in our devotion to Allah, for He is worthy of all praise and worship.
