Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • "Maqam" (مقام): A station, rank, or position — here referring to a specific place of worship and service assigned to each angel in the heavens.
  • "Ma'lum" (معلوم): Known, determined, and fixed — a designated position that is well-defined and unchanging.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this noble verse, Allah informs us of the words of the angels, who are pure and devoted servants of their Lord. The angels declare: "There is not one among us except that he has a known station." This means that every single angel has a designated place and rank in the heavens where he stands in worship of Allah — a position that is fixed and known to Allah alone. Some angels are assigned to specific heavens, others to particular acts of worship, and each one remains in his appointed station, never exceeding it except by Allah's permission.

This statement comes as a response to the false claims of the polytheists who alleged that the angels were daughters of Allah or partners with Him. The angels hereby absolve themselves of such falsehood, affirming their complete servitude and submission to Allah. They are not independent beings with divine qualities; rather, they are obedient servants, each occupying his assigned place in the cosmic order of worship.

Furthermore, the angels continue by affirming that they stand in rows upon rows in the worship of Allah, never ceasing in their devotion, and they glorify and purify Allah from every imperfection, defect, or attribute that does not befit His majestic nature.

A Da'wah Reflection:

This verse carries a profound lesson for humanity. If the angels — those noble and sinless creatures — are so devoted to their Lord that each one has a fixed station of worship, then how much more should we, as human beings, strive to establish our own stations of worship and obedience to Allah? Our lives are not aimless; each of us has a purpose and a place in Allah's grand design. Just as the angels occupy their ranks in the heavens, we too are called to occupy our ranks on earth — through prayer, charity, kindness, and devotion — so that we may draw nearer to our Creator.

Let this verse inspire you to ask yourself: What is my station in the worship of Allah? Have I established my daily prayers, my remembrance of Allah, my service to His creation? The angels never tire of their worship, and they set before us an example of constancy and dedication. Let us follow in their footsteps, for the gates of heaven are open to those who strive, and the reward of Allah is beyond measure.
