Tafsir (Explanation):
This verse describes the infamous tree called *Az-Zaqqum*, which Allah has prepared as a punishment for the wicked. It is a tree that does not grow in a garden or on pleasant earth, but rather it springs forth from the very bottom of the blazing Fire — from the deepest pit of Hell. Its roots are embedded in the scorching flames, and its branches rise up through the layers of Hellfire. It was created from fire and nourished by fire, making it utterly vile in its origin, appearance, and taste.
Imagine a tree whose very soil is molten fire, whose water is searing heat, and whose fruit is the food of the damned. This is not a tree of shade or comfort; it is a tree of torment. Its fruit is so hideous that it resembles the heads of devils — a terrifying sight that fills the heart with dread. And from this tree, the disbelievers will be forced to eat until their bellies are full, only to be followed by a drink of boiling, foul water that tears their insides apart. Then, after all of that, they are returned to the Fire for even greater punishment.
This vivid imagery serves as a profound warning to humanity. Allah, in His infinite mercy, has told us about this reality so that we may turn back to Him before it is too late. He does not wish to destroy us; rather, He wishes to save us. The description of this tree is not meant to frighten us into despair, but to awaken our hearts and guide us toward the path of righteousness. Every soul has the choice: to seek the gardens of Paradise, where rivers flow beneath trees of everlasting bliss, or to face the tree of Zaqqum in the depths of Hell.
Let this verse be a reminder that our actions in this world determine our destination in the next. The Qur'an does not hide the truth from us; it lays it bare so that we may reflect, repent, and strive for what is good. How merciful is our Lord, who warns us before we arrive at that dreadful place, giving us every opportunity to change our course! So let us seize this moment, turn to Allah with sincere hearts, and seek His forgiveness and guidance. For He is the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful, and He loves those who return to Him.
