Surah As-Saffat — Verse 63

• Fitnah (فِتْنَةً): A trial, test, or cause of deviation and misguidance. It refers to something that exposes the truth from falsehood and causes people to stumble or fall into error.

Explanation of the Verse:

In this profound verse, Allah (Glorified and Exalted be He) declares: "Indeed, We have made it a trial for the wrongdoers." The pronoun "it" refers to the tree of Zaqqum, which grows in the depths of Hellfire. This tree is a miraculous and terrifying reality that Allah has created as a test and a tribulation specifically for those who have wronged themselves through disbelief and sin.

When the disbelievers heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) inform them that there is a tree in Hellfire, they were utterly bewildered and mocked the message. They argued among themselves, saying: "How can a tree grow in fire? Fire consumes trees and burns them to ashes!" Their limited, worldly reasoning could not comprehend the infinite power of Allah, who is capable of all things. They failed to understand that the Creator of fire and trees — the One who made fire cool and safe for Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) — is fully able to make a tree grow and thrive within the flames of Hell.

This verse serves as a powerful reminder that the Quran and its truths are a means of guidance for the believers and a source of confusion and misguidance for the disbelievers. The same revelation that enlightens the hearts of the faithful becomes a stumbling block for those who persist in arrogance and denial.

Yet, Allah in His infinite mercy has sent us this warning so that we may turn back to Him before it is too late. The disbelievers mocked the idea of a tree in fire because they measured Allah's power by their own limited understanding. But the believer knows that Allah's power knows no bounds — He creates whatever He wills, however He wills, whenever He wills.

Let this verse be a call to you: do not be among those who let pride and arrogance blind them from the truth. Open your heart to the Quran, submit to its guidance, and you will find peace in this life and salvation in the next. The choice is yours — will you be among the wrongdoers who are tried by the truth, or among the believers who are guided by it? Allah has made the path clear, and He invites you to His mercy and forgiveness before the Day when no soul shall avail another.
