Translation — Tafsir

Word Meanings:

  • فَرَاغَ (Faraagha): He turned to, or inclined towards, with intent and determination.
  • عَلَيْهِمْ (Alayhim): Upon them — referring to the idols.
  • ضَرْبًا (Darban): Striking, hitting, or smashing.
  • بِالْيَمِينِ (Bil-yameen): With the right hand — signifying strength and power, as the right hand is the stronger and more capable of forceful action.

Explanation of the Verse:

This verse describes a pivotal moment in the life of Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham, peace be upon him) — a moment of bold, decisive action in the cause of monotheism. After his people left to celebrate their festival, Ibrahim remained behind, and when the time was right, he turned to their idols with firm resolve. He struck them forcefully with his right hand, smashing them to pieces — all except the largest one, as mentioned in the following verses — to demonstrate their utter powerlessness and worthlessness.

The use of the right hand here is significant: it symbolizes strength, vigor, and determination. Ibrahim did not act half-heartedly or timidly; he acted with full conviction and courage, breaking the false gods that his people had worshipped for generations. His action was not an act of vandalism, but a profound lesson — a physical demonstration that these idols, which could not even defend themselves, were unworthy of worship. Only Allah, the Creator of the heavens and the earth, deserves our devotion and submission.

This scene teaches us a timeless lesson: that truth must be upheld with courage, even when it means standing alone against the majority. Ibrahim stood alone against an entire nation, yet his faith gave him the strength to act decisively. His trust in Allah was so complete that he feared no consequence, knowing that Allah would protect him and vindicate the truth.

A Call to Reflection and Action:

Dear reader, look at the courage of Ibrahim — he did not merely speak against falsehood; he acted against it with his own hands. How often do we see wrong around us and remain silent or passive? This verse invites us to examine our own lives: Are we standing up for truth and justice in our families, our communities, and our societies? Are we breaking the idols of our time — whether they be greed, arrogance, blind following of tradition, or the worship of material desires?

Ibrahim's story reminds us that Allah honors those who honor Him. When you sincerely stand for truth, Allah will never abandon you. He will grant you wisdom, strength, and victory, just as He did for His beloved Prophet Ibrahim. Let this verse inspire you to be a person of action — one whose faith translates into deeds, and whose love for Allah moves you to purify your life and the world around you from all forms of falsehood.

May Allah grant us the courage of Ibrahim, the wisdom of his heart, and the strength of his right hand — to live for truth, to speak for justice, and to act for His sake alone. Ameen.
